Eight engineering students from Tamil Nadu were killed after their car rammed into a parked goods lorry at Panambikkunnu in Thrissur district late Friday night
Eight young engineering students from Tamil Nadu were killed in a late-night road accident near Kaipamangalam in Thrissur district after their car collided with the rear of a goods lorry parked on the highway.
Thrissur: Eight young engineering students were killed in a tragic road accident at Panambikkunnu Centre near Kaipamangalam in Thrissur district late Friday night, police said.
The accident occurred at around 11:40 PM when the Tamil Nadu-registered car carrying the students collided with the rear of a goods lorry parked on the roadside.
All eight occupants of the car died at the spot. The deceased are believed to be students of PSNA Engineering College in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu.
Car Rams Into Parked Lorry Near Kaipamangalam
According to the information available, the goods lorry had been parked near a curve because of ongoing work on National Highway 66.
The car, bearing Tamil Nadu registration TN 59 DW 8299, was reportedly travelling from the Guruvayur side towards Kodungallur when the driver lost control and rammed into the rear of the parked lorry.
The force of the collision severely damaged the car and trapped the students inside.
Rescue Teams Pull Students From Wreckage
Following the accident, local residents, fire and rescue personnel and police rushed to the spot. The students were trapped inside the severely damaged vehicle and could not get out. Rescue personnel used a gas cutter to cut open the vehicle and retrieve the bodies.
The Kaipamangalam police reached the accident site and initiated further proceedings. The bodies were subsequently shifted to the mortuary at Thrissur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Five Students Identified in Thrissur Car Accident
Police and authorities have identified five of the deceased as:
- World, 20, Salem, Tamil Nadu
- Sun, 20, Dindigul
- Yuva Sanjith, 20, Dindigul
- Santhosh, 20, Madurai
- Prasanna, Madurai
Identification of the remaining three deceased students is underway.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the conditions under which the goods lorry was parked near the highway curve.
