Mumbai: A landslide struck Gausia Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Ghatkopar, during the early hours of Wednesday, killing two people and raising concerns that several others may still be trapped beneath the debris.
The landslide occurred at around 3:48 am when a portion of the hill slope collapsed. The debris came down onto two to three houses in the area, leaving residents and emergency responders at the scene.
Following information about the incident, the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams reached the location and began rescue operations.
Two Dead in Mumbai Landslide
Police have confirmed that two people died in the Ghatkopar landslide. Rescue personnel are continuing to search through the debris for people who may have been trapped after the slope collapsed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde said that three to four people were suspected to be trapped under the debris.
DCP Ganesh Shinde said three to four people may still be trapped beneath the debris, with rescue operations continuing at the site.
The exact number of people trapped is expected to become clearer as the rescue teams clear the debris and conduct further searches.
Two Injured Shifted to Hospital in Mumbai
Two people injured in the landslide were identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari and 14-year-old Mohammad Ansari.
Sohel sustained a head injury, while Mohammad suffered an injury to his back. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment, and their condition is currently reported to be stable.
Authorities are continuing to assess the affected houses and surrounding area as rescue personnel search for anyone who may still be trapped.
NDRF and Fire Brigade Continue Rescue Operation in Mumbai
The Mumbai Fire Brigade, police and NDRF teams are carrying out the rescue operation at Gausia Chawl.
