The civic body stated that the demolition follows court permission and is aimed at clearing encroachments while addressing the alleged illegal rental network operating in the area.
Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Wednesday launched an encroachment removal drive at KR Market, demolishing unauthorised commercial structures constructed beneath the flyover. The operation, carried out by the BBMP's Central Zone, targets nearly 150 illegal shops that officials say were built without approval and had been functioning for several years.
The demolition began early in the morning with the deployment of earthmoving machinery and civic officials at the site. According to BBMP authorities, the operation is being conducted after obtaining the necessary permission from the court and will continue until all identified unauthorised structures are cleared.
"The demolition is being carried out after obtaining court permission and will continue until all identified unauthorised shops are removed," BBMP officials said.
BBMP Demolition Drive at KR Market Under Court Approval
Officials stated that notices had already been issued to occupants of the unauthorised shops around 15 days ago, informing them about the proposed demolition. Following the completion of the legal process, the civic body initiated the removal of the structures on Wednesday.
According to BBMP, the demolition is expected to be completed within two days, subject to operational requirements at the site.
KR Market Illegal Shops Allegedly Linked to Rental Network
BBMP officials said the unauthorised shops had allegedly been constructed without approval and were being rented out for commercial purposes. The civic body stated that the demolition drive is also intended to curb the alleged network involved in developing and leasing such illegal structures.
"Action is being taken against unauthorised commercial structures, and the demolition drive will continue without interruption," officials stated.
Encroachment Removal to Continue Across KR Market Area
Authorities said the ongoing operation forms part of the BBMP's broader initiative to remove encroachments from public spaces and ensure compliance with civic regulations in the city.
The civic body added that further action will be taken wherever unauthorised constructions are identified, in accordance with applicable laws and court directions.
