The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Karnataka's coastal districts and Yellow Alerts for several interior districts as the southwest monsoon is expected to bring widespread rainfall over the next four days

Karnataka is likely to experience widespread rainfall over the next four days as the southwest monsoon strengthens across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for coastal districts and Yellow Alerts for several districts in North and South Interior Karnataka, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds, waterlogging, and possible landslides.

Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Karnataka over the next four days as the southwest monsoon has become more active across the state. In response to the changing weather conditions, the department has issued district-wise weather alerts, including a Red Alert for the coastal region and Yellow Alerts for several districts in North and South Interior Karnataka.

The alerts have been issued as a precautionary measure to minimise risks to public safety, particularly in flood-prone and landslide-vulnerable areas that could witness prolonged heavy rainfall.

Karnataka Rain Alert as Coastal Districts Face Heavy Downpour

According to the IMD, Karnataka's coastal districts are expected to receive very heavy rainfall, prompting the issuance of a Red Alert. Authorities have cautioned residents to remain vigilant as continuous rain could result in waterlogging, overflowing rivers, flash floods in low-lying areas, and an increased risk of landslides.

Officials have advised people living in vulnerable locations to closely monitor official weather updates and follow instructions issued by local administrations.

"The weather alerts have been issued as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety, especially in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides."

Yellow Alert Issued for Bengaluru and Several Interior Districts

The IMD has also placed several districts under a Yellow Alert, indicating the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall during the first week of July.

Districts covered under the Yellow Alert include:

  • Bengaluru
  • Mysuru
  • Hassan
  • Shivamogga
  • Chikkamagaluru
  • Several other districts across North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka

The department said weather conditions could intensify depending on the progress of the southwest monsoon.

Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Likely Across Karnataka

In addition to heavy rainfall, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph at several places across the state.

Although no immediate severe threat has been reported, meteorologists have advised residents to remain alert, as weather conditions can change rapidly during the active monsoon phase.

Authorities have urged the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and avoid venturing outdoors during thunderstorms whenever possible.

IMD Advises Caution for Travellers in Karnataka

The weather department has also issued an advisory for commuters and travellers, warning that heavy rainfall may lead to waterlogging on roads, poor visibility, traffic congestion, and falling trees due to strong winds.

These conditions could disrupt both road transport and daily commuting in several districts over the coming days.

"People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and follow weather advisories issued by local authorities."

Emergency response teams and civic agencies have been asked to remain prepared to respond to rain-related incidents if required.

Southwest Monsoon Expected to Remain Active in Karnataka

With the southwest monsoon gaining strength over Karnataka, widespread rainfall is expected to continue across many parts of the state during the next four days.

Officials have appealed to citizens, particularly those residing in flood-prone and hilly regions, to remain cautious, monitor official forecasts, and take necessary safety precautions as the monsoon activity intensifies.
