BMTC is planning to introduce audio advertisements inside buses between stop announcements to increase non-fare revenue while retaining the existing passenger information system
The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is preparing to introduce audio advertisements inside its buses as part of its strategy to boost non-fare revenue. While the proposal is expected to strengthen commercial earnings, it has also sparked concerns among commuters over its potential impact on bus stop announcements, particularly for visually impaired passengers.
Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is planning to introduce audio advertisements inside its buses as part of a broader initiative to increase non-fare revenue and strengthen its financial sustainability. The proposed system will play commercial advertisements through onboard speakers between the regular announcements of upcoming bus stops.
The move comes after BMTC expanded its advertising initiatives by allowing buses to be wrapped with promotional branding, further enhancing its commercial revenue streams beyond passenger fares.
BMTC Audio Advertisement Plan for Bengaluru Buses
According to the proposal, advertisements will be broadcast through the existing onboard public announcement system during the intervals between announcements of the next bus stop. The corporation has clarified that the current voice-based passenger information system, which informs commuters about upcoming stops, will continue to operate alongside the advertisements.
BMTC is expected to float a separate tender for implementing the audio advertising system across its fleet.
A similar model is already operational at several Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stands, where advertisements are played between public service announcements.
"The existing passenger information system will continue to announce upcoming bus stops alongside the proposed audio advertisements."
Commuters Raise Accessibility Concerns
The proposal has drawn attention from regular commuters, many of whom rely on the onboard stop announcements during their daily travel.
The voice announcement system is particularly important for visually impaired passengers, senior citizens, first-time travellers, and commuters unfamiliar with bus routes. Concerns have been raised that excessive commercial advertisements could distract passengers or reduce the effectiveness of essential travel information.
Accessibility advocates are expected to closely monitor how BMTC balances commercial interests with passenger convenience before implementing the system.
BMTC Expands Non-Fare Revenue Sources
The introduction of audio advertisements forms part of BMTC's long-term strategy to diversify its revenue sources beyond ticket collections.
In addition to bus advertising, the corporation generates income through:
- Leasing land owned by BMTC
- Renting commercial spaces at bus terminals
- Leasing office premises
- Providing vehicle parking facilities
- Installing advertising panels across BMTC properties
- Commercial branding on buses
Officials believe these initiatives will help strengthen the financial position of the transport corporation while reducing dependence on fare revenue.
BMTC Fleet and Financial Performance
BMTC currently operates 6,158 buses, including 1,027 electric buses, providing public transport services across Bengaluru city, suburban regions, and nearby rural areas.
The corporation has witnessed substantial growth in commercial earnings through its non-traffic revenue initiatives. During the 2023–24 financial year, BMTC generated approximately ₹811 crore from various non-fare revenue sources, highlighting the growing importance of commercial activities in supporting public transport operations.
"The proposed audio advertisement system is aimed at further strengthening BMTC's non-fare revenue while maintaining uninterrupted passenger information services."
Commercial Growth While Maintaining Passenger Services in BMTC
With the proposed introduction of onboard audio advertisements, BMTC aims to further improve its financial sustainability without compromising its public transport services.
As the corporation moves towards inviting tenders for the project, commuters and accessibility groups are expected to watch closely to ensure that essential passenger announcements remain clear, timely, and easily accessible for all users.
