Karnataka Congress leadership moves to defuse portfolio row as high-level negotiations continue in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: The internal crisis within the Karnataka Congress government appears to be easing as senior minister Ramalinga Reddy is likely to withdraw his resignation by Friday evening following intensive negotiations led by AICC Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala and Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. The development comes amid escalating discussions over cabinet portfolio allocation that had triggered political tension within the ruling party.
According to senior party sources, the breakthrough emerged after multiple rounds of high-level discussions involving key Congress leaders, aimed at resolving dissatisfaction over ministerial responsibilities and preventing further instability within the newly formed cabinet.
Karnataka Congress crisis over portfolio allocation triggers tension
The controversy began after Ramalinga Reddy expressed dissatisfaction with his assigned portfolio, reportedly expecting the influential Bengaluru Development Department. His discontent escalated into a resignation, prompting urgent intervention from the party leadership.
Sources indicate that the disagreement centred on portfolio distribution within the cabinet, particularly roles considered politically significant due to their administrative influence in Bengaluru’s development framework.
Surjewala's intervention in Ramalinga Reddy's resignation talks
A key turning point came after Reddy met Randeep Singh Surjewala in Bengaluru, where he reportedly conveyed his concerns in detail regarding the allocation process. During the discussion, Reddy expressed that clarity on portfolio assignment should have been provided earlier in the decision-making process.
“If I had known in advance that I would be given another portfolio, I would not have accepted the ministerial post,” Reddy is reported to have said during the meeting.
Responding to the concerns, Surjewala assured that the matter would be discussed with the Chief Minister and resolved through internal consultations. Following the assurance, Reddy indicated he would await further developments until the evening before making a final decision.
DK Shivakumar Surjewala emergency meeting at Taj West End
Following the initial discussions, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar held an emergency meeting with Surjewala at the Taj West End Hotel in Bengaluru. The meeting focused on resolving the internal disagreement and finalising a consensus strategy to address ministerial dissatisfaction.
Party insiders said the discussions revolved around maintaining cabinet stability and ensuring that the portfolio allocation dispute does not escalate further within the ruling establishment.
Satish Jarkiholi pushes for Muniyappa portfolio adjustment
Meanwhile, senior minister Satish Jarkiholi has also intervened in the matter, advocating additional responsibilities for veteran leader K H Muniyappa. He reportedly urged the leadership to assign the Minor Irrigation portfolio in addition to Muniyappa’s existing responsibilities, citing seniority and representation concerns.
Jarkiholi also emphasised the importance of accommodating Ramalinga Reddy within the cabinet structure, highlighting his political experience and influence in Bengaluru.
“Ramalinga Reddy is an important and influential leader in Bengaluru. He is the right person to handle Bengaluru city politics,” Jarkiholi is reported to have said.
Bengaluru development portfolio dispute at the centre of the crisis
The dispute primarily revolves around the Bengaluru Development portfolio, widely considered one of the most politically sensitive departments in Karnataka due to its role in infrastructure planning and urban governance.
Political observers note that control over this portfolio carries significant administrative weight, making it a recurring point of negotiation in cabinet formations.
Karnataka Congress high command pushes for internal resolution
Sources indicate that the Congress high command is keen to avoid any cabinet reshuffle at this stage and has advised state leaders to resolve differences through dialogue rather than portfolio changes. Party strategists are reportedly cautious about setting precedents that could trigger similar demands from other ministers.
Cabinet stability remains a priority amid ongoing negotiations
As discussions continue, party leaders are working to ensure that Ramalinga Reddy formally withdraws his resignation by the evening, thereby restoring stability within the Karnataka cabinet. While no official announcement has been made yet, internal signals suggest that a compromise is close.
The situation remains under close watch as further consultations between senior leaders and the high command are expected to finalize the outcome.
