A devastating fire triggered by a suspected short circuit at a Muzaffarpur hospital claimed multiple lives, while more than 20 patients were rescued
Muzaffarpur: A major fire accident at a private hospital in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district has claimed the lives of at least three patients and triggered a large-scale rescue operation. The blaze reportedly erupted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Prasad Hospital during the early hours of Thursday, creating panic among patients, attendants, and medical staff.
More than 20 patients trapped inside the smoke-filled building were successfully rescued by emergency response teams. Several patients were shifted to nearby hospitals for advanced treatment as authorities launched an investigation into the incident.
Bihar Hospital Fire Sparks Massive Rescue Operation
According to preliminary reports, the fire broke out around 3 a.m. in the ICU ward following a suspected short circuit. Thick smoke quickly spread across the hospital premises, making evacuation difficult and increasing the risk for critically ill patients.
A team led by Fire Officer R.N. Pandey immediately rushed to the spot after receiving an emergency alert. Twelve fire tenders were deployed to contain the blaze and carry out rescue operations amid dense and toxic smoke.
The coordinated efforts of firefighters and rescue personnel helped bring the situation under control within a few hours, preventing an even greater tragedy.
ICU Patients Among Victims of Muzaffarpur Hospital Blaze
Officials confirmed that at least three patients admitted to the ICU lost their lives, reportedly due to suffocation caused by the heavy smoke. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional casualties, and a detailed assessment is underway.
Medical teams worked swiftly to evacuate patients from different sections of the hospital. Those requiring urgent care were transferred through specially equipped ambulances to nearby healthcare facilities.
“The rescue operation was launched immediately after the fire was reported. More than 20 patients were evacuated safely despite extremely challenging conditions,” officials involved in the operation stated.
District Administration Monitors Emergency Response
As the seriousness of the incident became clear, senior district officials rushed to the hospital. District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) personally supervised the rescue and relief efforts on the ground.
The Civil Surgeon also remained at the site to ensure that rescued patients received immediate medical attention. Authorities coordinated with hospitals across the city to arrange treatment for patients displaced by the fire.
A special administrative team has been assigned to communicate with family members and provide updates regarding the health condition and location of affected patients.
Short Circuit Suspected as Cause of Hospital Fire
Initial findings suggest that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the blaze inside the ICU. However, officials have stressed that the exact cause will be determined only after a comprehensive technical investigation.
The district administration has ordered a detailed probe into the incident, including a review of the hospital's fire safety systems, emergency preparedness measures, and compliance with safety regulations.
Hospital Fire Safety Under Scrutiny After Deadly Incident
Despite the loss of lives, authorities noted that the prompt action of firefighters and rescue personnel helped save more than 20 patients who were trapped inside the building.
The situation at the hospital is currently reported to be under control, with rescue operations completed and investigators examining the circumstances that led to the deadly fire.
