Chinese President Xi Jinping urges the United States and China to move beyond rivalry and build a new era of partnership during high-stakes talks with Donald Trump in Beijing
Beijing: In a major diplomatic message that could reshape global geopolitics, Xi Jinping called on China and the United States to move beyond strategic rivalry and build a future based on cooperation, stability, and mutual respect.
Welcoming U.S. President Donald Trump during a high-profile summit in Beijing, Xi said the world’s two largest economies must avoid confrontation and instead embrace partnership at a time of rising global uncertainty.
Xi emphasised that both nations should become “partners, not rivals,” stressing that cooperation would bring long-term benefits, while conflict would only create losses for both countries and the international community.
“Cooperation brings mutual benefit. Confrontation brings damage,” Xi said during opening remarks in Beijing.
Global Stakes at Historic Summit
The two-day summit marks the first U.S. presidential visit to China in nearly a decade and comes at a time of heightened tensions over trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, and global security issues.
Xi also referred to the growing international concern over possible conflict between a rising power and an established global power, warning against what analysts often describe as the “Thucydides Trap”, a historic pattern where strategic competition leads to war.
He said both nations must create a new diplomatic framework capable of avoiding such conflict and ensuring long-term peace and global stability.
Trump-Xi Meeting Could Shape Global Markets
President Trump, who arrived in Beijing on May 13 for the state visit, described the relationship with China as one that could become “better than ever,” signalling optimism despite deep policy differences. Talks are expected to focus heavily on trade access, technology competition, AI cooperation, and regional security.
Xi also congratulated the American people ahead of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, adding symbolic warmth to a summit being closely watched by global markets and political observers.
Analysts believe outcomes from this meeting could significantly influence global trade, diplomatic stability, and economic confidence in the months ahead.
