Gunfire erupted near the White House complex in Washington as Secret Service officers shot a suspected attacker after an armed confrontation

Washington: A major security scare unfolded near the White House complex in the United States after a shooting incident near Pennsylvania Avenue NW left a suspected gunman dead following a counterattack by security personnel.

According to preliminary information released by the United States Secret Service, the incident took place shortly after 6 PM local time when a man allegedly approached a security checkpoint carrying a bag before suddenly pulling out a firearm and opening fire at officers stationed near the White House perimeter.

Security personnel immediately retaliated, shooting the suspect during the exchange of gunfire. Authorities later confirmed that the injured suspect was rushed to a hospital but died during treatment.

At the time of the shooting, Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House complex. Officials stated that the President remained completely safe and was never directly exposed to danger during the incident.

White House Security Responds After Multiple Gunshots Fired
Initial reports suggest the suspect fired nearly 20 rounds outside the White House complex before officers neutralised the threat. Federal agencies and security forces immediately sealed off the surrounding area as emergency response teams rushed to the scene.

Authorities also confirmed that one pedestrian sustained injuries during the incident. However, investigators are still trying to determine whether the civilian was struck by bullets fired by the suspect or during the officers’ response.

Importantly, no Secret Service personnel were injured during the exchange.
“The suspect engaged officers near the security area before being neutralised by armed personnel,” the Secret Service said in an official statement.
Investigation Intensifies Around White House Shooting
Federal investigators are currently examining the motive behind the attack, the suspect’s background, and how the individual managed to approach the high-security perimeter with a weapon.

The shooting has once again raised concerns about security threats around major government buildings in Washington, especially amid heightened political tensions and increased protection surrounding President Trump.
The area around Pennsylvania Avenue witnessed heavy security deployment for several hours following the incident, while forensic teams collected evidence and reviewed surveillance footage.
Previous Security Threats Near White House Raise Alarm
The latest incident adds to a series of security threats reported near the White House in recent months.

Last November, two members of the West Virginia National Guard were reportedly attacked in the same region. In that incident, US Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom lost her life, while another officer, identified as Andrew Wolf, suffered severe injuries.
Earlier this year, authorities also claimed to have foiled an alleged assassination attempt linked to an event attended by Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. A suspect identified as Cole Thomas Allen from California was later taken into federal custody in connection with the case.
The latest shooting has now intensified discussions around presidential security, gun violence, and federal protection measures in the United States.
