Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay’s expected swearing-in faces uncertainty after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar reportedly seeks stronger proof of majority support in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: In a dramatic twist to Tamil Nadu’s rapidly evolving political landscape, actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, popularly known as Vijay, has reportedly hit a roadblock just hours before what was expected to be his historic swearing-in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Sources indicate that Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is not fully convinced with the majority figures submitted by Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), casting uncertainty over government formation.
After emerging as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, TVK chief Vijay formally met Governor Arlekar and staked claim to form the government. Political circles believed Thursday would mark Vijay’s official swearing-in as Chief Minister.
However, late developments suggest the Governor may have sought additional clarity on the numbers presented by TVK. Sources close to Raj Bhavan indicate that the Governor is carefully examining whether the support letters and alliance commitments presented by Vijay are sufficient to cross the crucial majority mark of 118 seats in the Assembly.
This development has triggered intense speculation across political circles and among Vijay’s supporters, who had already begun celebrating what many called a political revolution in Tamil Nadu.
TVK’s Historic Rise But Numbers Still Under Question
Vijay’s entry into active politics through Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam reshaped Tamil Nadu’s political equations. Contesting its first-ever Assembly election, TVK delivered a major electoral performance and emerged as the largest party in the state.
Despite the breakthrough, TVK reportedly fell short of the majority mark, forcing Vijay to seek external support from other parties. Political sources claim that support from Indian National Congress was expected to strengthen TVK’s numbers and pave the way for government formation.
But the Governor’s reported hesitation has now put the final decision on hold.
“Being the single-largest party may create the opportunity, but constitutional majority remains the deciding factor.”
With uncertainty surrounding the oath-taking ceremony, all eyes are now on Raj Bhavan. If the Governor remains unconvinced, Vijay may be asked to submit fresh proof of support or demonstrate majority strength on the Assembly floor.
This unexpected political twist has not only delayed what could have been Vijay’s biggest political moment but has also opened the door for intense behind-the-scenes negotiations in Tamil Nadu politics.
Supporters of Vijay continue to gather outside party offices, while rival parties are closely monitoring the Governor’s next constitutional move.
Whether this is a temporary pause or a bigger political hurdle for Vijay will become clear in the next 24 hours.
