In a major crackdown in Belagavi, Karnataka Police’s Akka Pade successfully stopped two child marriages in just two days, rescuing girls aged 13 and 17 and triggering legal action against parents
Belagavi: In a significant operation against child marriage in Karnataka, the women's safety unit known as Akka Pade has successfully prevented two illegal child marriages within just 48 hours in Belagavi district, sending a strong warning to violators despite existing legal restrictions.
The operations, carried out in separate parts of the city, led to the rescue of two minor girls aged 13 and 17, while police have initiated criminal proceedings against the parents involved.
This latest action has drawn appreciation from Bhushan Borase, who praised the team for its alertness and immediate intervention.
How the First Child Marriage Was Exposed
The first incident was reported in the Vantamuri Colony area of Belagavi. According to officials, the family of a 17-year-old girl had allegedly made complete arrangements for her marriage.
Police sources revealed that members of Akka Pade visited the location out of curiosity after noticing unusual activity and gathering crowds. During verification, officials were shocked to discover that preparations were underway for a minor girl’s marriage.
The team immediately intervened and stopped the ceremony before it could proceed further.
Second Rescue Operation in Shahapur
In another case, authorities received credible information about a 13-year-old girl being prepared for marriage in the Shahapur locality. Without delay, the Akka Pade team, along with concerned officials, rushed to the spot, verified the information, and successfully halted the marriage proceedings.
Both girls have now been placed under protective monitoring, while counselling and legal procedures are being initiated.
“Child marriage is a punishable offence. Timely intervention by field officers can save lives and protect futures,” officials involved in the operation stated.
Police Register Cases Against Parents
Following both incidents, local police have registered cases against the fathers of the girls under relevant child protection and marriage prohibition laws.
Authorities confirmed that further investigation is underway to identify whether any organisers, relatives, or community facilitators were involved in arranging the ceremonies.
Akka Pade Expands Mission Beyond Child Marriage
Apart from preventing child marriages, Akka Pade has also intensified patrols across schools, colleges, bus stands, marketplaces, and other public areas in Belagavi to ensure the safety of young girls from harassment and anti-social elements.
Officials say these proactive field operations are helping build trust among women and students across the city.
