Siddaramaiah’s post highlighting government achievements has intensified speculation over his possible resignation as Karnataka Chief Minister
Bengaluru: Karnataka’s political atmosphere intensified further on Tuesday after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shared a detailed social media post highlighting his government’s welfare achievements amid growing speculation over his possible resignation.
The development comes at a time when reports of an imminent leadership transition within the Karnataka Congress have reached a peak following Siddaramaiah’s recent meetings with senior Congress high command leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, in New Delhi.
Political observers are now closely analysing Siddaramaiah’s latest post on his flagship welfare programme “Annabhagya,” with many interpreting it as a possible farewell message ahead of an expected resignation from the Chief Minister’s post.
Sources within Congress circles claim Siddaramaiah is likely to step down on Thursday as part of the long-discussed internal power-sharing arrangement within the party.
Siddaramaiah Highlights Three Years of Governance
Amid intense resignation speculation, Siddaramaiah used his official X account to reflect on the achievements of his government over the last three years, particularly focusing on the Congress party’s five guarantee schemes.
In his message, Siddaramaiah thanked the people of Karnataka and dedicated the success of his administration to the citizens of the state.
“We are proud that we fulfilled every promise made to the people before the elections and successfully implemented all five guarantee schemes,” Siddaramaiah wrote.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the success of the Annabhagya scheme, which provides free food grains to economically weaker sections under the state welfare programme.
The timing of the post immediately triggered political debate, with supporters and observers questioning whether Siddaramaiah was subtly signalling the conclusion of his tenure.
Annabhagya Scheme Becomes Political Talking Point
The Annabhagya scheme has long been regarded as one of Siddaramaiah’s most ambitious welfare initiatives and remains closely associated with his political identity in Karnataka.
Originally introduced during his earlier tenure as Chief Minister in 2013, the scheme was later expanded during his current administration to strengthen food security among economically vulnerable families.
Under the programme, beneficiaries receiving food grains through the National Food Security Act are additionally provided free food support by the Karnataka government, ensuring a total allocation of 10 kg of food grains per beneficiary every month.
In his social media post, Siddaramaiah stated that the government had spent nearly ₹18,897 crore under the scheme so far and claimed that more than 4.26 crore ration beneficiaries had benefited from the programme.
“No person should sleep hungry in Karnataka,” Siddaramaiah has repeatedly maintained while defending the scheme.
Political analysts believe the detailed emphasis on Annabhagya in the midst of resignation reports has strengthened perceptions that the Chief Minister may be attempting to define his political legacy before stepping down.
Childhood Memory Behind Siddaramaiah’s Welfare Vision
Siddaramaiah has often spoken emotionally about the inspiration behind the Annabhagya programme during public interactions and private events.
The Congress veteran previously recalled a childhood incident involving a neighbouring family from the Savita community who would regularly visit his house seeking rice due to poverty.
According to Siddaramaiah, witnessing such hardship during his early years deeply influenced his decision to introduce large-scale food security measures later in political life.
“No one should have to stand at another person’s doorstep asking for food,” Siddaramaiah had said while explaining the philosophy behind the scheme.
The emotional narrative associated with Annabhagya has played a major role in shaping Siddaramaiah’s welfare-oriented political image over the years.
Farewell Signal or Political Messaging?
The Chief Minister’s post has now become the centre of intense political interpretation in Karnataka.
With resignation speculation dominating the political landscape, many Congress workers and opposition leaders are questioning whether Siddaramaiah intentionally chose to revisit his welfare achievements as a symbolic political farewell.
Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah attended a commemoration programme for former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at Vidhana Soudha, where he briefly addressed the media.
However, the Chief Minister avoided directly responding to questions regarding his resignation and stated that he would speak in detail tomorrow.
“I will speak to the media tomorrow regarding everything,” Siddaramaiah said before leaving the venue.
As political suspense deepens, Karnataka now awaits Siddaramaiah’s anticipated announcement, which could mark one of the most significant leadership changes in recent state politics.
