Over 5,500 snake bite cases and 56 deaths reported across Karnataka in five months

Bengaluru: Karnataka is witnessing a sharp rise in snake bite cases and related deaths, prompting the Karnataka Health Department to issue fresh public warnings and strengthen emergency medical preparedness across the state.

According to official data, as many as 5,597 people have suffered snake bites in Karnataka between January and May 17, 2026, while 56 people have lost their lives during the same period.

The alarming increase in cases has raised concerns among health authorities, especially as several victims reportedly delayed hospital treatment and relied on unscientific remedies.

Snake Bite Cases Increase Rapidly Across Karnataka
Health officials stated that snake bite incidents are being reported from multiple districts, including areas in and around Bengaluru.

Authorities noted that the number of snake bite cases has increased significantly in recent weeks due to changing weather conditions and increased human interaction with snake habitats during the rains and agricultural activities.
Data released by the department revealed that more than 2,000 people suffered snake bites in the last month alone, while over 10 deaths were recorded during the same period.
In just the past week, 545 snakebite cases and four deaths have reportedly been documented across the state.
“People should immediately seek medical treatment after any snake bite and avoid negligence,” health officials warned.
Health Department Orders Stocking of Anti-Snake Venom
Following the rising number of fatalities, the Karnataka Health Department has instructed all government hospitals to maintain sufficient stock of anti-snake venom injections.
The advisory reportedly applies to public hospitals in Bengaluru as well as district and taluk hospitals across Karnataka.
Officials said emergency treatment facilities are being strengthened to ensure a quick response in rural and urban areas where snake bite incidents are increasing.

Medical experts have also been directed to create awareness among the public regarding first aid and emergency response measures.

Delay in Treatment Emerging as Major Concern
Doctors and health experts say many deaths are occurring because victims often ignore initial symptoms or turn to traditional remedies instead of visiting hospitals immediately.
According to medical professionals, delays in administering anti-venom treatment significantly increase the risk of fatal complications.

Health officials have urged citizens not to depend on local myths, herbal remedies, or unverified treatments after snake bites.

Experts stressed that even non-venomous bites should receive medical evaluation to avoid complications and panic.

Public Advisory Issued During Monsoon Season
Authorities have advised residents, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, to remain cautious during the ongoing rainy season when snake movement typically increases.

People have been asked to wear protective footwear in fields, avoid walking in dark areas without light, and seek immediate emergency care after any snake encounter or bite.

The Health Department is expected to continue monitoring the situation closely as snake bite incidents continue to rise across Karnataka.
