Mobile phone recovered after hospital procedure as screening lapse inside Mangaluru district jail raises serious concerns over prison security and monitoring systems
Mangaluru: A shocking case of security breach inside a district jail has come to light in Karnataka’s Mangaluru, where an accused inmate was caught attempting to smuggle a mobile phone by concealing it inside his body (Rectum), raising serious concerns over prison surveillance and screening mechanisms.
The accused, identified as Mohammed Tohid, was lodged in the district jail in Kodiyalbail. Officials stated that he had been admitted to Wenlock Hospital on April 24 due to health issues and was discharged after treatment.
Upon his return to the jail on Thursday evening, KSISF personnel conducted a routine check using a metal detector, during which suspicious signals were detected, prompting further inquiry.
Confession Leads to Recovery of the Mobile Phone
During questioning, the accused reportedly confessed to concealing a keypad mobile phone inside his body. He was immediately shifted back to the hospital, where doctors successfully retrieved the device through a medical procedure.
Case Registered, Probe Launched
Following the incident, a case has been registered at Barke Police Station. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine how the device was obtained and whether any internal or external assistance was involved.
“Such incidents indicate serious lapses in internal security and demand stricter monitoring,” sources said.
Security Lapses Raise Broader Concerns
The incident has once again highlighted recurring issues of contraband smuggling and unauthorised communication within prisons, raising urgent questions about staff accountability and the effectiveness of current screening systems.
Experts stress the need for advanced body-scanning technology, tighter surveillance, and strict enforcement of prison protocols to prevent similar breaches in the future.
