Mangaluru: A shocking attack on a police constable during night duty has raised serious security concerns in Karnataka’s coastal city of Mangaluru after unidentified bike-borne assailants allegedly assaulted an on-duty policeman and fled the scene.

The incident took place late Sunday night in the Kodikal area of Mangaluru, where Police Constable Hanumanth Kanti and Home Guard Basavaraj were deployed near the Narayana Guru Cooperative Society building for routine night patrol and vehicle monitoring.

According to police officials, the attack occurred around 2 am when the officers attempted to stop a speeding two-wheeler for checking.

Mangaluru Police Constable Assaulted During Vehicle Check
Authorities stated that the motorcycle riders initially ignored police instructions and sped away from the checkpoint without stopping. However, in a dramatic turn of events, the accused allegedly returned to the same location within minutes.

Police said one of the bike riders suddenly attacked Constable Hanumanth Kanti and struck him forcefully on the head before escaping from the scene.

Despite sustaining injuries, the constable reportedly attempted to chase and catch the attackers, but the accused managed to flee before additional personnel could reach the spot.

The sudden assault created panic in the area and highlighted the growing risks faced by police personnel during late-night law enforcement duties.
“The accused attacked the constable and escaped immediately after the assault,” officials said during the preliminary investigation.
CCTV Footage Captures Attack on Mangaluru Policeman
Investigators confirmed that the entire incident was captured on nearby CCTV cameras installed in the locality. Police teams are currently analysing the footage to identify the attackers and trace the motorcycle used in the crime.
Officials believe the CCTV evidence may play a crucial role in tracking down the accused involved in the assault.
Constable Hanumanth Kanti sustained minor injuries to the head and was admitted to a hospital for treatment. Doctors later confirmed that he is out of danger and recovering.

Urva Police Register Attempt to Murder Case
Urva Police Station has registered a case against the unidentified attackers under multiple stringent sections, including attempt to murder under BNS Section 109.
Police officials have launched an intensive search operation to trace the suspects, while patrols and vehicle checks have been strengthened in surrounding areas.
Senior officers are also monitoring the investigation closely due to the seriousness of the attack on uniformed personnel during active duty hours.

Attack Raises Concern Over Safety of Police Personnel
The incident has sparked concern among law enforcement circles and residents regarding increasing attacks on police personnel during routine enforcement operations.

Officials noted that such violent behaviour against police officers performing official duties will be dealt with strictly under the law.
