Students at BHU’s Dalmia Hostel staged protests after a lizard was allegedly found in chicken curry served during lunch

Varanasi: A major controversy erupted at Banaras Hindu University after students of Dalmia Hostel allegedly discovered a lizard in chicken curry served at the hostel mess during lunch on Wednesday.

The shocking incident triggered anger among students, leading to protests inside the hostel premises and raising serious concerns regarding food hygiene, sanitation, and hostel management practices.

Following the uproar, university authorities reportedly shut down both the hostel mess and canteen while students who consumed the food were placed under medical observation as a precautionary measure.

Lizard Allegedly Found During Lunch at Dalmia Hostel

According to reports, students residing at Dalmia Hostel were having lunch when a lizard allegedly emerged from the chicken curry being served at the mess.

The discovery immediately caused panic and outrage among students, many of whom began protesting against what they described as severe negligence in food preparation and hostel maintenance.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the hostel warden, along with members of the Proctorial Board, reportedly rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection of the mess and canteen facilities.

Authorities subsequently ordered the temporary closure of the mess and canteen pending further examination.

“A dead lizard was found in the food being served to students. This is a serious health issue,” protesting students reportedly said.

Students Raise Serious Allegations Over Hostel Conditions

Following the incident, students alleged that complaints regarding poor hostel facilities and unhygienic conditions had been repeatedly ignored by authorities for a long time.

According to students, multiple issues related to drinking water supply, toilet cleanliness, food quality, and kitchen hygiene had previously been raised through written complaints, but no effective action was taken.

Students also alleged that both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items were being prepared using the same cooking oil and that kitchen utensils were not being cleaned properly.

“Nothing is being monitored properly, from food quality to hygiene standards,” students alleged during the protest.

The allegations have intensified concerns regarding food safety standards inside university hostels.

Students Demand Closure of Mess and Better Facilities

Angry students demanded permanent corrective measures, including strict food safety monitoring, clean drinking water facilities, and improved sanitation across the hostel premises.

Some students also called for action against those responsible for managing the mess and canteen operations.

Authorities stated that students who consumed the lunch have been kept under medical supervision to monitor any possible health complications.

Meanwhile, hostel officials and senior professors reportedly held discussions with protesting students in an attempt to calm tensions and restore normalcy within the campus.

Food Safety Concerns Trigger Campus Debate

The incident has once again brought attention to food hygiene standards in educational institutions and hostels across India.

Students and parents on social media expressed concern over repeated complaints involving hostel food quality and campus sanitation in universities.

University authorities are yet to issue a detailed official statement regarding further action, accountability, or inspection findings connected to the incident.

The matter continues to remain under scrutiny as students demand stricter monitoring of food preparation and hostel management systems at BHU.
