Private pharmacies across Karnataka are likely to remain shut as traders protest online medicine sales and discount practices
Bengaluru: After concerns over the disruption of transport bus services across Karnataka on May 20, the common public may face another major inconvenience as private medical shops across the state are likely to remain closed during a nationwide strike called by pharmacy traders and distributors.
The protest has been organised against online medicine sales, alleged illegal e-pharmacy operations and heavy discount practices by large corporate platforms. Several pharmacy and drug distribution organisations in Karnataka have extended support to the strike, raising concerns over the availability of medicines during emergencies.
The statewide impact is expected to be significant, especially in cities including Bengaluru, where thousands of private pharmacies may remain shut for the entire day.
Karnataka Pharmacy Associations Support Nationwide Strike
The Karnataka Chemists and Druggists Association has announced direct support for the nationwide protest. Several other organisations, including the Karnataka Pharma Retailers and Distributors Organisation, have also extended moral support to the agitation.
Pharmacy traders claim that online medicine platforms are selling drugs without proper prescriptions and offering massive discounts that are severely affecting traditional medical shops and small businesses.
According to the protesting organisations, unchecked online sales could also pose risks to public health if medicines are supplied without proper medical supervision.
“Illegal online medicine sales and deep discount practices are destroying the livelihood of small traders and affecting public safety,” trader representatives stated.
Online Medicine Sales Trigger Strong Opposition
Medical shop owners allege that large e-pharmacy companies are attracting customers through aggressive pricing strategies, making it difficult for small retailers to survive.
The organisations have urged the central government to introduce stricter regulations on online medicine platforms and ensure fair business practices in the pharmaceutical sector.
As part of the protest, private medical shops are expected to remain closed throughout Tuesday in many parts of Karnataka and across the country.
However, pharmacies operating inside hospital premises are likely to function normally.
Public Advised to Buy Essential Medicines in Advance
With both transport disruption fears and pharmacy closures expected on May 20, citizens have been advised to purchase essential medicines and emergency medical supplies in advance to avoid inconvenience.
The protest could particularly affect elderly patients, people dependent on daily medications and those requiring urgent medical access during the day.
