Kakinada: A tragic road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district claimed the lives of four MGNREGA workers after a speeding dumper truck allegedly rammed into them from behind on Saturday morning. The fatal incident took place on the Kovvuru Bridge located on National Highway 216 on the outskirts of Kakinada town.

According to police officials, the victims were part of a group of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act workers who were walking along the bridge when the dumper truck suddenly struck them from behind, causing fatal injuries on the spot.

Police confirmed that all four deceased victims were women employed under the MGNREGA rural employment scheme. Two other workers who sustained injuries in the crash were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Authorities stated that the impact of the collision was severe, leading to panic among commuters and local residents passing through the busy highway stretch.
“Four women MGNREGA workers died and two others were injured after a dumper truck hit them from behind,” police officials confirmed.
Kovvuru Bridge Crash Under Investigation
Law enforcement teams reached the accident site shortly after the incident and shifted the bodies for postmortem examination. Traffic movement on National Highway 216 was temporarily affected as police and emergency personnel carried out rescue and clearance operations.

Investigators are now examining whether overspeeding, driver negligence, or lack of road safety measures contributed to the deadly crash.

Road Safety Concerns in Andhra Pradesh
The incident has triggered fresh concerns over pedestrian safety on major highways and bridges, especially for rural workers travelling on foot during early morning hours.

Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the accident.
