Rising Middle East tensions raise concerns over crude oil prices and India’s energy security

Bengaluru: Growing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have triggered fresh concerns over India’s energy security, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi issuing a strong public appeal asking citizens to use petrol, diesel, and other imported fuel products cautiously.

The Prime Minister’s remarks have sparked widespread discussion across economic and political circles, with analysts warning that if crude oil prices continue to rise globally, fuel prices and essential commodity costs in India may face upward pressure in the coming weeks.

Speaking during a public address, Modi emphasised that international conflicts are directly affecting global energy supply chains, making it necessary for citizens to participate collectively in reducing unnecessary fuel consumption.
“We must use imported fuel only as needed. Saving foreign exchange and reducing the economic impact of global conflict requires collective responsibility,” the Prime Minister said during his address.
No Fuel Price Hike Yet, But Concerns Growing
Despite rising speculation, petrol and diesel prices across major Indian cities remain unchanged as of May 11, according to industry reports. However, market analysts say sustained crude oil prices above $100 per barrel could increase financial pressure on India’s oil marketing companies.

Government officials have clarified that there is currently no fuel shortage in India, and supplies remain stable. At the same time, the Petroleum Ministry has acknowledged that oil companies are absorbing high costs to shield consumers from immediate retail price hikes.

Economists Warn of Broader Inflation Impact
Economic experts say if global crude prices continue climbing due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, the impact may extend beyond fuel.

Possible sectors that could witness price pressure include:
  1. * Transportation and logistics
  2. * Food and essential commodities
  3. * Cooking gas and household fuel
  4. * Manufacturing and industrial production
  5. * Agriculture and fertiliser costs
India imports a large share of its crude oil requirements, making the economy sensitive to international energy disruptions.

Government Pushes Conservation Measures
As part of the appeal, PM Modi also encouraged citizens to:
* Use the metro and public transport
* Adopt carpooling wherever possible
* Prefer electric vehicles if available
* Resume work-from-home and virtual meetings where practical
* Reduce unnecessary foreign spending to protect foreign exchange reserves

These measures, experts say, are part of a broader strategy to protect India’s economy from prolonged global instability.

While no official announcement has been made regarding a fuel price revision, the Prime Minister’s remarks have intensified speculation that India may be preparing for economic adjustments if the global energy crisis deepens.
