At least 15 labourers died and several others were injured after a truck carrying workers overturned on a highway in Bangladesh’s Tangail district
Dhaka: A devastating road accident in Bangladesh claimed the lives of at least 15 people after a truck carrying labourers overturned on a highway in Tangail district early Monday morning. More than 10 others sustained injuries in the tragic incident that occurred as workers were travelling home to celebrate Eid al-Adha with their families.
According to police officials, the fatal accident took place around 5 am on the Soratoyil highway in Tangail district, located nearly 83 kilometres northwest of Dhaka. The victims were mostly poor daily wage labourers returning to their hometowns ahead of the upcoming Eid al-Fitr festival.
Bangladesh Highway Accident Leaves Eid Travellers Dead
Police officer Fuad Hossain stated that the labourers were travelling by hitchhiking on a truck transporting iron rods from Dhaka toward the northern regions of the country. During the journey, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing the heavily loaded truck to overturn violently on the highway.
The massive weight of the iron rods and the impact of the crash resulted in several passengers being crushed under the vehicle and metal materials. Authorities confirmed that 15 people died at the spot due to the severity of the accident.
Local residents rushed to the scene immediately after hearing a loud crash in the early morning hours. Eyewitnesses told television channels that rescue efforts began instantly as villagers attempted to pull trapped passengers from beneath the overturned truck and scattered iron rods.
More Than 10 Injured in Tangail Truck Crash
More than 10 injured victims were quickly shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials said some passengers suffered serious injuries, and emergency medical teams continue to monitor their condition.
The horrifying accident has cast a shadow of grief over communities preparing for Eid celebrations, as families waiting to reunite with loved ones instead received tragic news of death and injuries.
Several victims were believed to be low-income workers who had been travelling in unsafe conditions due to the rush of holiday movement ahead of Eid al-Adha.
Bangladesh Road Safety Concerns Rise Again
The deadly crash has once again highlighted serious concerns over road safety standards in Bangladesh. The country frequently witnesses fatal road accidents caused by weak traffic enforcement, overloaded vehicles, poor road conditions, and reckless driving practices.
With a population exceeding 170 million, Bangladesh continues to struggle with transportation safety challenges, particularly during festive seasons when highways witness heavy traffic movement and overcrowded transport vehicles.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations into the accident, including whether the truck was overloaded and if negligence contributed to the tragedy.
