Inquiry Finds Alleged Fabrication of Research Publications, Legal Opinion Sought Before Disciplinary Action
Tumakuru: In a major academic integrity controversy, two faculty members of the Kannada Department at Tumkur University are facing disciplinary proceedings over allegations of submitting forged research documents to secure promotions.
The accused have been identified as Professor Annamma and Associate Professor P.M. Gangadharaiah, both associated with the university’s D.V. Gundappa Kannada Studies and Research Centre. The case has raised serious concerns about academic fraud and verification mechanisms within higher education institutions.
Fake Publication Claims Under Scrutiny
According to university sources, both professors allegedly claimed that their research articles were published in Indian Literature, a reputed journal brought out by the Sahitya Akademi
Professor Annamma reportedly submitted eight articles and supporting certificates, while P.M. Gangadharaiah claimed authorship of three research papers in the September–October 2024 issue of the journal.
However, verification revealed that none of the claimed articles was published, and the certificates submitted allegedly carried forged signatures of the journal’s editor, Prof. Madhav Kaushik.
Committees Confirm Documents Were Fake
Vice-Chancellor Prof. M. Venkateswaralu constituted two independent committees to verify the authenticity of the submissions. Both panels concluded that the documents and publications were fabricated.
Further confirmation was sought from the Sahitya Akademi, which officially stated that:
“No articles authored by the individuals were published in Indian Literature, and no such certificates have ever been issued.”
This response effectively confirmed that the documents used to claim promotion were not genuine.
Promotions Sought Based on Alleged False Claims
The controversy stems from promotion applications submitted by the faculty members:
- Professor Annamma had applied for elevation to the post of Senior Professor
- P.M. Gangadharaiah had sought promotion to Professor
The alleged use of fabricated academic credentials to support these applications has triggered a serious disciplinary review.
Legal Opinion Sought, Action Pending
University authorities have sought legal expert opinion before initiating final disciplinary measures. Sources indicate that strict action, including suspension, compulsory retirement, or dismissal, is being considered.
The matter is expected to be placed before the University Syndicate for further decision-making once legal inputs are received.
Accused Denies Allegations
Despite the findings, both faculty members have denied wrongdoing.
Professor Annamma stated she has submitted her clarification and declined further comment, while P.M. Gangadharaiah alleged that the case is a conspiracy to damage his reputation.
Academic Integrity Under Spotlight
The incident has brought renewed focus on research verification processes, peer review credibility, and accountability in academic promotions.
Experts believe the case could set a precedent for stricter scrutiny of academic credentials across universities.
NewsFlash Daily™ Opinion
This case raises a deeper and uncomfortable question: What kind of role model does academia present when those entrusted with shaping young minds are accused of manipulating the very system they represent? Universities are not just institutions of degrees; they are pillars of credibility, ethics, and intellectual honesty.
If allegations of forged research and fabricated publications are proven, it risks eroding trust not only in individuals but in the academic ecosystem itself. For students who look up to professors as guides and mentors, such incidents can send a dangerous message that shortcuts may replace merit.
At a time when India is striving to strengthen its global academic reputation, cases like this underline the urgent need for transparent verification systems, strict accountability, and zero tolerance for academic misconduct. The outcome of this case will not just decide the fate of two careers, but could also define the standards of integrity that future generations inherit.
