Staff nurse Shweta dies after suicide attempt in Sorab taluk, parents accuse in-laws of torture over property dispute, four arrested
Shivamogga: In a tragic and disturbing incident, a four-month pregnant woman from Shivamogga district has died after allegedly being driven to suicide due to harassment by her husband’s family, with her parents now claiming it was a case of murder.
The deceased, identified as Shweta (30), a staff nurse, had attempted suicide on March 29 in Hodabatte village of Sorab taluk. She was later shifted to Manipal Hospital for advanced treatment, where she succumbed despite medical efforts.
Four Accused Arrested in the Case
Following a complaint filed at the Soraba Police Station, police have registered a case and arrested four individuals, including her father-in-law, Sannappa; her mother-in-law, Janaki; and relatives Hemanth and Divya.
Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will be taken based on evidence.
Allegations of Harassment Over Property
Shweta’s parents have made serious allegations of sustained harassment, claiming their daughter was being mentally and physically tortured over property disputes within the family.
“Our daughter was not weak. She was harassed and forced into this situation,” family members alleged, demanding strict justice.
They further accused the in-laws of forcing her out of the house and subjecting her to repeated abuse, which they claim ultimately led to her death.
Family Alleges Murder, Seeks Justice
In a shocking claim, Shweta’s family has alleged that the accused may have killed her by setting her on fire, calling for a thorough investigation into all possible angles, including homicide.
The incident has triggered outrage among relatives and locals, with demands for strict punishment against those responsible.
Police Probe Underway
Police officials stated that the case is being investigated from multiple angles, including abetment to suicide and possible foul play. Post-mortem findings and forensic evidence are expected to play a key role in determining the exact cause of death.
