Udupi: A tragic drowning incident has been reported from Herga village near Manipal in Udupi district, where a rickshaw driver lost his life while swimming in a local river stretch. The incident came to light after his body was recovered on Sunday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Sujith Kumar (42), son of Narayan Poojary and a resident of Herga village. He was working as a rickshaw driver and had reportedly stepped out for work before the incident.

According to preliminary information, Sujith Kumar later went for a swim in a river stretch near Herga, during which he accidentally drowned and went missing. The exact location is within the Manipal police limits and is not connected to Holebaagilu near Sagara, as initially reported in some accounts.

The body was found on the riverbank at around 7 am, bringing an end to the search efforts launched after he was reported missing.
