Asia’s largest coconut market in Maddur hit by a sharp supply drop due to heatwave and Nusi disease, prices climb to ₹50+ per coconut
Mandy: A severe coconut water shortage has hit Karnataka’s Mandya district amid rising summer temperatures, sending prices soaring and disrupting supply chains. Maddur, widely known as Asia’s largest coconut water market, is witnessing an unprecedented dip in arrivals, leaving both traders and consumers under pressure.
Traders report that the market, which typically receives five to six lakh tender coconuts daily, is now struggling to get even 1.5 to 2 lakh units per day. The sudden drop has triggered a supply-demand imbalance, especially as consumption peaks during the scorching summer months.
Heatwave and Disease Behind Supply Crunch
The primary reasons for the shortage are extreme summer heat and the spread of Nusi disease, which is causing tender coconuts to fall prematurely from trees. This has significantly reduced the availability of market-ready coconut water.
Farmers and traders say the dual impact of climate stress and crop disease has hit production harder than expected this season.
Prices Cross ₹50 Mark in the Wholesale Market
With supply dwindling, the price of coconut water has surged sharply. In the Maddur market itself, prices have reached ₹50 to ₹53 per coconut, depending on quality.
For traders transporting coconuts to urban centres, the cost rises further due to transportation, handling, and logistics expenses, pushing retail prices even higher.
Traders and Consumers Face Double Burden
The shortage has placed financial pressure on traders, who are struggling to meet demand, while consumers are forced to pay higher prices for what is considered a staple summer beverage.
Industry stakeholders warn that unless supply stabilises soon, the situation could worsen further in peak summer weeks.
Market Outlook Remains Uncertain
Experts suggest that weather patterns and disease control measures will play a crucial role in stabilising supply. Until then, both availability and pricing are expected to remain volatile.
