Srinagar: Security has been significantly intensified across Kashmir as the nation observes the first anniversary of the deadly terror attack at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, where 26 people, including tourists and a local pony operator, were gunned down by terrorists in 2025.

Authorities have deployed police and paramilitary forces at key locations, including major tourist destinations, anticipating memorial events and gatherings to pay tribute to the victims of the brutal attack.

Nation Remembers Victims of Baisaran Attack

On April 22, 2025, terrorists carried out a devastating assault at Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist spot in Pahalgam, often referred to as the ‘Mini Switzerland’ of Kashmir. The attack claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local pony-ride operator, sending shockwaves across the country and severely impacting tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The aftermath saw a mass exodus of tourists, forcing authorities to temporarily shut down nearly 50 tourist destinations. These sites were later reopened in a phased manner following detailed security audits.

Tourism Revives Amid Tight Security

One year after the tragedy, Pahalgam is witnessing a steady return of visitors, with tourist activity gradually picking up. Despite the haunting memories of the attack, many travelers have resumed visits, reflecting growing confidence in enhanced security measures.

Officials noted that the region is overcoming the shadow of terror, with no significant decline in tourist sentiment this season.

New Safety Measures Introduced for Tourists

To ensure visitor safety, authorities have implemented stringent verification systems for all tourism-related service providers. This includes mandatory background checks of pony operators, vendors, hawkers, and other service personnel interacting with tourists.

A QR code-based identification system has been introduced as a key security innovation. Under this system, every registered service provider carries a unique QR code containing detailed personal and verification information.

“Each service provider has been properly vetted by police and assigned a QR code with complete identification details to ensure transparency and safety,” an official stated.

The QR codes include critical details such as name, address, Aadhaar number, mobile number, registration status, operational route, and police verification status, enabling quick authentication by tourists and authorities.

Top Officials Review Security Preparedness

Kashmir Inspector General of Police V K Birdi recently chaired a high-level security review meeting at the Police Control Room (PCR) in Kashmir. He directed officials to strengthen security around vulnerable installations and major tourist hubs to ensure a safe environment for visitors.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from multiple agencies, including the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Traffic Police, Railways, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), reflecting a coordinated approach to security management.

Heightened Vigil Amid Commemorations

With commemorative events and public gatherings expected across the Valley, authorities remain on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents. Security forces are maintaining strict surveillance and conducting area domination exercises across sensitive zones.
