Deadly explosion in Bishnupur district claims lives of two minors; suspected militant strike intensifies fears amid ongoing Manipur unrest
Imphal: In a tragic escalation of violence in Manipur, a bomb attack on a residential house in Bishnupur district has killed two young children and left their mother injured, reigniting concerns over the fragile security situation in the region.
The incident occurred in Moirang Thronglabii village around 1 AM on Tuesday, when an explosive device reportedly struck a civilian home while the family was asleep. The blast instantly killed a 5-year-old boy and a 6-month-old infant girl inside their bedroom.
Their mother, who was also present in the room, sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
Suspected Militant Involvement
Officials suspect the attack was carried out by armed militants linked to the Kuki groups, although investigations are ongoing. The village, located near the foothills bordering Churachandpur, has previously witnessed frequent clashes and firing incidents.
Part of Ongoing Ethnic Conflict
The attack is seen as a continuation of the ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities that erupted in 2023. The conflict, driven by disputes over land rights, political representation, and tribal status, has already resulted in hundreds of deaths, displacement, and destruction of property.
Rising Concern Over Civilian Safety
The latest incident has sparked outrage and fear among residents, with leaders condemning the act as inhuman and terror-like violence targeting innocent civilians.
“Such barbaric acts have no place in our society,” said BJP MLA Shanti Singh, reacting strongly to the incident.
Tension Continues to Simmer
Despite intermittent efforts to restore peace, the situation in Manipur remains volatile, often described as “like embers beneath ashes”, with sudden flare-ups continuing to disrupt normalcy.
