The issue gained attention following the tragic death of Neha Hiremath in 2024 at a college campus in Hubballi, allegedly by a fellow student after she refused marriage. Additionally, complaints from families claiming that their daughters eloped with individuals from another religion have further fueled the narrative.

Authorities have urged caution and objectivity. The police commissioner stated that all complaints are being formally registered and investigated.
“Only after thorough investigation can it be determined whether these are consensual relationships or something else,” officials said.
The police emphasised that conclusions should not be drawn prematurely and that each case will be examined on its own merits.
