Shockwaves hit India after Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces allegedly opened fire on two Indian vessels in the Hormuz Strait, killing four sailors and leaving one missing despite fresh assurances on safe maritime passage
New Delhi: In a major international flashpoint that has triggered diplomatic outrage, four Indian sailors were killed, and one remains missing after Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces allegedly opened fire on two Indian ships in the Strait of Hormuz, according to official information cited from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
The attack reportedly targeted Indian vessels Jagarnav and Sanmar Herald, raising serious concerns over maritime safety in one of the world’s most sensitive shipping corridors.
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is said to have expressed deep concern over the deadly incident, while New Delhi has reportedly summoned the Iranian ambassador to lodge a strong protest.
Attack Comes Hours After Iran Promised Safe Passage
The firing incident reportedly occurred only hours after Iran announced that the Hormuz Strait would remain open for commercial shipping following a ceasefire understanding involving the United States and Iran.
The timing of the attack has intensified global concern, as it came soon after statements from Iran’s foreign ministry regarding the safe movement of cargo vessels.
Despite those assurances, ships carrying the Indian flag were allegedly targeted, creating serious diplomatic and strategic questions.
“India has sought a clear explanation regarding the motive and circumstances behind the attack,” sources said.
Four Dead, One Missing
According to reports, four Indian crew members lost their lives, while another sailor remains untraceable after the firing.
Emergency response and maritime tracking efforts are reportedly underway to locate the missing crew member and secure the affected vessels.
The identities of the deceased sailors had not been officially released at the time of reporting.
India Registers Strong Protest
The Indian government has reportedly summoned Iran’s envoy and demanded immediate clarification over the attack on Indian-linked vessels.
The development could strain ties and lead to wider international scrutiny over security in the Hormuz Strait, a route critical for global oil and trade movement.
Experts warn that any escalation in the region could impact shipping costs, fuel markets, and strategic trade lanes.
