Heavy rains continue to claim lives in Bengaluru, Bowring Hospital wall collapse, electrocution incidents and fresh roof collapse expose safety lapses

Bengaluru: The rain-related death toll in Bengaluru has risen to 10, after a fresh incident under Chamarajpet police limits claimed another life, deepening concerns over public safety amid continuing heavy showers.

The latest victim, identified as Manjunath, died after the roof and cement bricks of his house collapsed while he was asleep. His body has been shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Roof Collapse Turns Fatal Amid Heavy Winds
According to preliminary reports, a metal sheet on the roof had been weighed down with a stone to prevent it from being blown away. However, due to strong winds and heavy rain, the sheet dislodged, causing the stone to fall directly on Manjunath, resulting in his death.

This incident has further highlighted the vulnerability of weak housing structures during extreme weather conditions.

Bowring Hospital Tragedy Claims 7 Lives
Earlier, a major disaster unfolded near Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, where a compound wall collapse led to the death of seven people, including a child.

The deceased have been identified as:

  1. Mohammed Abdul (52), JC Nagar
  2. Fayyaz Ahmed (39), DJ Halli
  3. Musavir Begum (6), KJ Halli
  4. Smita (47) and Latha (57), from Kerala
  5. Naseemullah (19), from Assam
  6. Salahuddin Ansari (36), from Uttar Pradesh

Most victims were street vendors and pedestrians who had taken shelter near the old compound wall during the rainstorm. The wall, reportedly weakened, collapsed suddenly, trapping them under debris.

Electrocution Incidents Add to Death Toll
In a separate incident at Yarab Nagar, a student identified as Syed Sufian died due to electrocution while attempting to park his bike amid heavy rain.

Another fatality was reported under JP Nagar police limits, where a man named Raghu, aged around 30–35, lost his life after coming into contact with a live electric wire near the 15th Cross of Mini Forest area.

These incidents have raised serious concerns about exposed electrical infrastructure and safety preparedness during monsoon conditions.

Back-to-Back Tragedies Raise Alarm Over Urban Safety
With multiple deaths occurring due to wall collapse, electrocution, and structural failures, the ongoing rains have exposed glaring gaps in urban infrastructure, maintenance, and disaster preparedness in Bengaluru.

“These repeated incidents underline the urgent need for safety audits and preventive measures across the city,” officials and experts noted.

Authorities have urged citizens to avoid weak structures, stay away from electric poles and wires, and remain cautious during heavy rainfall.

City on Edge as Rains Continue

As rains continue to lash parts of Bengaluru, the rising death toll has intensified fears among residents, with officials on high alert to prevent further casualties.
