IMD forecasts thunderstorms and intense evening showers across Bengaluru, southern and eastern zones on high alert after deadly April 29 rains
Bengaluru: After a devastating spell of rain that claimed 9 lives and caused widespread destruction, Bengaluru is once again bracing for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning today, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The city, still reeling from Wednesday’s tragedy, is expected to witness cloudy skies post-noon, followed by intense rainfall during the evening or night, raising concerns over further disruption and safety risks.
In South Bengaluru, areas such as JP Nagar, Jayanagar, Bannerghatta Road and BTM Layout are likely to receive heavy showers.
In East Bengaluru, rain is expected in Whitefield, Marathahalli, HSR Layout and Bellandur.
Central areas including Shivajinagar, Majestic, MG Road and Shantinagar are also expected to witness rainfall.
Meanwhile, North Bengaluru localities like Yelahanka, Hebbal and RT Nagar may experience moderate showers.
Authorities have advised citizens to:
- Avoid standing near electric poles, transformers, and exposed wires
- Stay away from trees and unstable structures
- Avoid parking vehicles under trees
- Drive cautiously due to waterlogged roads and reduced visibility
Residents in low-lying areas have been asked to secure valuables and remain alert for possible flooding.
A tragic incident near Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital saw a compound wall collapse, killing seven people, including a child, contributing to the rising death toll.
More than 50 locations, including Malleswaram, Shantinagar and Seshadripuram, reported uprooted trees and road blockages.
Rainwater even entered the premises of Vidhana Soudha, including the office of Opposition Leader R. Ashok, highlighting the scale of disruption.
Motorists were stranded for hours due to waist-deep waterlogging, while metro services faced disruptions, causing major inconvenience to commuters during peak hours.
Despite the temperature dropping from 37°C, the rain has left the city grappling with chaos, damage, and safety concerns.
