Mukhyamantri Chandru urges the Karnataka government to move beyond promises, calls for funding, teacher training, and infrastructure overhaul in public education

Bengaluru: In the wake of the recent SSLC results, the Karnataka unit of the Aam Aadmi Party has intensified its push for comprehensive education reforms, with state president Mukhyamantri Chandru addressing an open letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The letter emphasises that education-related guarantees and reform announcements must go beyond advertisements and translate into concrete action on the ground, especially at a time when concerns over learning outcomes have resurfaced following SSLC performance trends.

AAP Model Highlighted as Benchmark for Governance
The party reiterated its ideological stance, stating that it was founded to bring a political transformation in India by rejecting traditional governance approaches. It also claimed that several state governments, including those led by the BJP and Congress, are increasingly adopting elements of the AAP governance model, particularly in sectors like education, healthcare, and public welfare.

The letter noted that initiatives such as free electricity and water, along with quality education and healthcare, have now become central to political discourse, attributing this shift to AAP’s policy interventions.

Delhi Education Reforms Cited as Influence
Referring to the impact of reforms in Delhi, AAP stated that Karnataka’s current education policy direction reflects the influence of its model. The Congress government’s announcement of eight key education guarantees was described as aligning closely with the Delhi education transformation framework.

However, the party cautioned that policy announcements without execution risk remaining symbolic, urging immediate steps for implementation.

Adequate Funding Crucial for Reform Success
Highlighting budgetary allocation as a core issue, the letter pointed out that nearly 25% of Delhi’s state budget is dedicated to education, which has been instrumental in its performance.

AAP urged the Karnataka government to increase funding allocation for the education sector, warning that without sufficient financial backing, reform promises may fail to materialise.

Teacher Capacity Building Emphasised
The letter underscored the role of teachers as the foundation of any education system, calling for structured programs focusing on training, leadership development, and institutional support.

It stressed that systematic teacher capacity building is essential to effectively implement reform measures and improve classroom outcomes.

Infrastructure Gaps in Government Schools Highlighted
AAP flagged the poor condition of infrastructure in several government schools across Karnataka, stating that neglect has led to declining public trust in the system.

The party urged the government to prioritise school infrastructure upgrades over promotional campaigns, drawing parallels with the infrastructural improvements seen in Delhi’s government schools.

Limited Reach of Karnataka Public Schools Questioned
The letter raised concerns over the limited scope of Karnataka Public Schools (KPS), noting that only around 900 out of 47,000 government schools fall under this category.

AAP argued that true reform requires universal access to quality education, ensuring that every government school benefits from policy interventions, rather than a select few.

Focus on Learning Outcomes Over Pass Percentage
Addressing academic standards, the party cautioned against measures such as reducing pass marks or awarding grace marks, stating that such steps indicate a decline in educational quality.

It urged the government to focus on improving learning outcomes and academic standards, rather than artificially inflating results.

“Promises have value only when they are implemented. The people of Karnataka expect results, not just announcements,” Chandru stated in the letter.

AAP Offers Support for Education Reforms
Concluding the letter, AAP expressed its willingness to extend full cooperation and expert guidance to the Karnataka government in strengthening public education.

The party expressed hope that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would act on these recommendations and deliver tangible improvements in the state’s education system.
