One-month marriage ends in tragedy as wife counters allegations, claims family pressure drove husband to extreme step; probe intensifies in Karkala
Udupi: The mysterious death of a newlywed man has taken a dramatic turn, with fresh allegations and counterclaims emerging from both families. Sudeep Shetty, who had been married for just a month, died after allegedly consuming poison, sparking widespread debate and a police investigation.
Following a complaint by Sudeep’s father against his daughter-in-law, his wife Soumya Shetty has now come forward, strongly denying all accusations and presenting her version of events.
Wife Breaks Silence, Counters Allegations
Soumya Shetty stated that she is unaware of the exact reason behind Sudeep’s death, adding that the couple had registered their marriage on February 17 and were planning a fresh start together.
She claimed that on March 17, when Sudeep had gone to Nelyadi, he sounded extremely disturbed and anxious during conversations, leading her to suspect that he may have consumed poison during that time.
“He believed poison wouldn’t affect him. But after a few days, his health deteriorated. I don’t know why he took that step,” Soumya said emotionally.
Allegations Against Husband’s Family
Soumya alleged that Sudeep’s family initially approved of their relationship but later changed their stance and began opposing the marriage.
She further claimed that Sudeep faced continuous mental pressure from his family, including alleged threats from his mother questioning his choice of marriage.
According to her, this constant rejection deeply affected Sudeep’s mental state.
“Why should I alone be blamed? Why can’t his family be questioned for what happened?” she asked.
Financial Struggles and Family Rift
Soumya also revealed that Sudeep had significant financial liabilities, and creditors would often contact her after being directed by his father.
She alleged that Sudeep had been distanced from his own family, and even minor expenses were not supported by them.
Clarifies Past, Denies Motive
Addressing allegations about her past, Soumya admitted she had a previous marriage nine years ago, but had taken a divorce due to harassment.
She also mentioned a past cheating incident involving a friend, for which she had filed a complaint, and clarified that none of these had any bearing on her relationship with Sudeep.
Soumya highlighted that Sudeep was fully aware of her past and had approached her through Facebook, pursuing her for nearly a year before marriage.
Hospital Statement Adds Twist
She further claimed that during treatment, Sudeep himself had admitted before doctors that he had consumed poison, contradicting allegations made against her.
Case Turns Complex, Probe Continues
The case has now become increasingly complex, with multiple angles under scrutiny. Police in Karkala are awaiting the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death.
Soumya has also indicated that she will file a complaint against her father-in-law, adding another dimension to the case.
