Kathmandu: At least seven people were killed and several others injured after a passenger bus carrying Indian pilgrims veered off the road and plunged down a slope in central Nepal, police officials said on Saturday.
According to authorities, the tragic accident occurred in Nepal’s Gandaki Province, when the vehicle lost control on a hilly stretch of road and tumbled down the slope, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries among passengers.
Pilgrims Returning From Temple When Accident Occurred
Police officials stated that the vehicle involved was a microbus transporting pilgrims who had visited the revered Manakamana Temple in the Gorkha region. The passengers were returning from the temple when the bus suddenly veered off the road and plunged down the hillside in Gorkha District.
The accident reportedly occurred on Saturday in Gandaki Province, a region known for its mountainous terrain and winding roads, which often pose challenges for drivers navigating steep slopes.
“Seven people lost their lives in the crash and several others sustained injuries. Rescue teams and local authorities rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the information,” police officials said.
Rescue Operations and Medical Assistance
Following the incident, local police, emergency responders and residents launched rescue operations, retrieving victims from the accident site and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Authorities are currently working to identify the victims and verify the nationalities of the passengers, as the bus was reportedly carrying pilgrims from India.
Officials added that an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether road conditions, mechanical failure or driver error contributed to the tragedy.
Mountain Road Safety Concerns
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with travel on mountainous roads in Nepal, particularly in regions with steep slopes and narrow highways frequently used by tourist and pilgrimage vehicles.
