A man carrying huge cash stopped at Kengal Gate, claiming money was for his uncle’s treatment; the incident revives debate over security lapses
Bengaluru: In a fresh security alert at Vidhana Soudha, police recovered Rs 6 lakh in cash from a man attempting to enter the premises, raising serious questions about access control and vigilance at one of Karnataka’s most sensitive government buildings.
The individual had reportedly arrived to meet Congress MLA Yashwant Rayagouda Patil when security personnel stopped him at the Kengal Gate for a routine check. During the inspection, officials discovered a large sum of cash in his bag, immediately triggering suspicion.
Stopped at Entry, Taken Into Custody
According to police sources, the man was denied entry after the cash was found, as carrying such a large amount inside the premises is prohibited. Despite being asked to leave, he allegedly insisted on meeting the MLA, prompting police to take him into custody for questioning.
He was later interrogated at the office of ACP Krishnaiah, where officials sought clarification on the source and purpose of the money.
‘Money for Medical Emergency,’ Claims Man
During questioning, the individual reportedly stated that he had come from the Indi constituency to obtain a letterhead from the MLA. He claimed that the Rs 6 lakh was meant for his uncle’s medical treatment.
“My uncle is unwell and admitted to the hospital. I brought this money for his treatment,” he told police during interrogation.
Authorities are currently verifying his claims and the origin of the cash.
Fresh Concerns After Recent Theft Case
The incident comes close on the heels of a recent theft at Vidhana Soudha, where lakhs of rupees and gold ornaments were reportedly stolen, raising alarm over security arrangements at the high-security premises.
Similar Incident in 2023 Resurfaces
This is not the first such case. In 2023, ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections, Rs 10.5 lakh was seized from an assistant engineer of the Public Works Department at the same location. The incident had triggered a major political controversy, with allegations and counter-allegations between the ruling and opposition parties.
Investigation Underway
Police are continuing their investigation to ascertain whether the cash seizure is linked to any wrongdoing or if the man’s explanation holds merit. The incident has once again highlighted the need for stricter security protocols and monitoring at key government institutions.
