Court mandates strict ID verification at entry and service points; says pub owners fully responsible if minors consume alcohol under any circumstance
Bengaluru: In a significant move to curb rising underage drinking, the Karnataka High Court has issued strict directives to pubs and breweries across the state, mandating compulsory age verification and holding owners fully accountable for violations.
The bench led by Justice M. Nagaprasanna made it clear that allowing minors to consume alcohol, whether knowingly or unknowingly, will attract serious legal consequences for establishment owners.
The court emphasised that age verification must be conducted at entry points as well as during service, ensuring no loopholes remain for minors to access alcohol.
“No Alcohol for Minors” Boards Made Mandatory
The High Court has directed all pubs and breweries to prominently display “Alcohol is prohibited for minors” signboards within their premises. These warnings must be clearly visible to customers at all times.
Owners Cannot Escape Responsibility
In a strong observation, the court ruled that even if minors manage to consume alcohol secretly inside pubs, the management will still be held entirely responsible.
“Protecting minors from alcohol addiction is both a moral and legal duty,” the court noted, underlining the broader societal impact of such violations.
Case That Triggered the Ruling
The court passed the order while hearing a petition filed by brewery owner V. Chittibabu from Rajarajeshwari Nagar, who sought to quash a case registered against him for allegedly serving alcohol to minors.
Refusing to dismiss the case, the court reinforced that business interests cannot override public safety and youth protection.
Legal and Social Implications
Authorities may now intensify inspections, and establishments failing to comply could face legal action, fines, or license cancellation.
