David van Weel says Iran angle under probe after arson at synagogue in Rotterdam; four teenagers held for ‘terror intent’
The Hague: Authorities in the Netherlands are investigating a possible link between Iran and a recent arson attack on a synagogue in Rotterdam, Justice Minister David van Weel informed parliament on Tuesday.
The minister clarified that while the Iran angle is being “explicitly investigated,” no conclusive evidence has been established so far.
Teen Suspects Arrested After Arson Attack
Dutch prosecutors confirmed that four suspects aged between 17 and 19 were arrested shortly after the incident, which took place early Friday morning. The fire, caused by an arson attack, was classified as being carried out with terrorist intent.
Officials believe the suspects may not have acted independently.
“The suspects had most likely been recruited,” van Weel stated, indicating the possibility of a larger network behind the attack.
Series of Attacks Raise Alarm
The Rotterdam synagogue attack is part of a disturbing pattern of recent incidents targeting Jewish institutions across the region.
Authorities reported a similar attack on a Jewish school in Amsterdam, while another synagogue in Liège was also targeted in recent days.
Although no injuries were reported, the incidents have triggered heightened security measures at Jewish sites across the Netherlands and neighboring regions.
Probe into Possible Links and Extremist Involvement
Investigators are currently examining whether these attacks are interconnected. An extremist group has reportedly claimed responsibility on social media, but police have yet to verify the authenticity of the claim.
The possibility of foreign influence or coordination, particularly involving Iran, has added a serious geopolitical dimension to the investigation.

In response to the attacks, authorities have significantly increased security presence around synagogues, schools, and other Jewish institutions.
