Raichur: Four members of the same family drowned in the Tungabhadra River near Raichur district, sending shockwaves across the region. The tragedy occurred at the Rajalabanda dam located in Kandakur village under Kosigi mandal, close to the Andhra Pradesh border.
According to reports detained by NewsFlash Daily™, a group of around 20 people had gone to the river for swimming when suddenly four individuals were swept away by strong water currents and drowned.
The officials said, " The family Members tried to save them but couldn't."
Victims Identified
The deceased have been identified as Umavati Govind (35), Ratna Mahantesh (28), Mahantesh Pitambar (24), all residents of Kurdi village in Manvi taluk, and Shivanand Hanumantharaya (24) from Sunkeshwar village. The victims had reportedly traveled to Kosigi to attend a relative’s wedding ceremony, turning a joyful occasion into a devastating loss.
Sudden Surge in Water Flow
Authorities indicated that water levels in the Tungabhadra River were significantly high, as water was being released to fill nearby lakes for drinking purposes during the summer season. The increased flow created dangerous conditions for those entering the river.
Police Action Initiated
A case has been registered at the Kosigi Police Station in Andhra Pradesh. Officials have begun an investigation into the incident and are expected to review safety measures in the area to prevent similar tragedies.
Rising Concern Over River Safety
This incident highlights the lack of awareness and precaution among visitors near water bodies, especially during periods of high discharge. Despite warnings, many continue to enter rivers without assessing the risks posed by strong currents.
“This tragedy underscores the urgent need for stricter safety measures and public awareness around rivers during high water flow periods.”
