A tragic CCTV-captured accident on Station Road claimed the life of 21-year-old student Basavaraj, exposing road safety lapses and triggering demands for compensation
Raichur: A final-year BSc student lost his life after falling from an auto-rickshaw and being run over by a bus. The deceased has been identified as Basavaraj (21), who died on the spot due to severe injuries. The entire incident was captured on CCTV, prompting outrage and renewed concerns over traffic safety and negligent driving.
Accident Occurred While Heading to Work
According to police sources, the incident took place on Station Road, one of Raichur’s busiest stretches. Basavaraj, a resident of an ST hostel, was travelling with friends in an auto-rickshaw from Ashapur Road towards Basaveshwara Circle. He was reportedly on his way to a catering job, which he undertook to support his education amid extreme financial hardship at home.
Sudden Swerve Led to Fatal Fall
Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage reveal that the auto driver suddenly swerved to avoid another auto-rickshaw that was stationary on the main road. Due to the abrupt manoeuvre, Basavaraj lost balance and fell onto the road. Within seconds, a bus approaching from behind ran over him, leaving him critically injured.
Death on the Spot, Case Registered
Police confirmed that Basavaraj succumbed instantly to the injuries caused by the impact. The Traffic Police Station has registered a case against the transport bus driver, and further investigation is underway. Officials stated that CCTV footage is being examined to determine liability and negligence.
“Preliminary investigation suggests rash driving and lack of caution. CCTV footage will play a key role in establishing responsibility,” a traffic police official said.
Struggle, Education, and Sudden Tragedy
Despite belonging to a very poor family, Basavaraj was determined to complete his studies. He pursued his BSc final year while working as a daily wage laborer in catering during his free time. Friends and hostel mates described him as hardworking and focused, with aspirations of securing stable employment after graduation.
Family Seeks Compensation and Justice
The victim’s family, devastated by the sudden loss, has demanded compensation and strict action against those responsible. Locals and student groups have also urged authorities to improve road safety measures and regulate reckless driving on busy city roads.
