A horrific crime in Krishnagiri has sent shockwaves across the state, raising serious questions about child safety and law enforcement response
Krishnagiri: In a deeply disturbing incident that has shaken Tamil Nadu, a DMK functionary has been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering a two-year-oldgirl, the daughter of his live-in partner, in Krishnagiri district. The accused has been identified as Periyanayagam, who was taken into custody following a detailed police investigation based on medical and forensic evidence.
Incident Details and Background
According to official police sources, the victim was the daughter of Princy, who had separated from her husband Surya due to marital disputes.
Following the separation, Princy was residing with her mother in Anchetty village in Krishnagiri district. During this period, she was reportedly in a relationship with Periyanayagam. Despite the separation, Surya continued to visit his daughter frequently.
Timeline of the Crime
Police stated that the incident allegedly occurred when the child's mother was not present at home. On February 11, the toddler reportedly lost consciousness under suspicious circumstances.
Princy immediately rushed the child to a private hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
Suspecting foul play, Surya lodged a formal complaint with the police, prompting authorities to initiate an in-depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child's death.
Post-Mortem Findings Reveal Sexual Assault
A post-mortem examination conducted by medical officials revealed serious injuries to the child's private parts, clearly indicating sexual assault.
Based on the autopsy report and subsequent questioning of family members and associates, investigators zeroed in on Periyanayagam as the prime suspect.
Following sustained interrogation, police arrested the accused, suspecting that the crime was committed in the absence of the child's mother.
Legal Action and Police Statement
Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code related to rape and murder. Authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing and that additional evidence is being examined to ensure a watertight case.
"This is a heinous crime. The case is being investigated with utmost seriousness, and no one involved will be spared," a senior police official said.
Political Reactions Intensify
The incident has sparked sharp political reactions across Tamil Nadu. The opposition party, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), launched a strong attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government.
In a statement, AIADMK leaders alleged that a government incapable of ensuring the basic safety of women and children has lost its moral right to remain in power, demanding accountability and stricter enforcement of child protection laws.
Police reiterated that the case is being treated as a top priority, assuring the public that strict legal action will be taken against the accused and that justice will be delivered.
