Full emergency declared at Delhi airport as IndiGo flight from Visakhapatnam faces engine trouble; disaster narrowly avoided
New Delhi: In a tense mid-air incident, an IndiGo flight travelling from Visakhapatnam to Delhi made a safe emergency landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday morning after suffering an engine failure, averting what could have been a major aviation disaster.
The flight, carrying 161 passengers and crew, encountered a technical snag in one of its engines just minutes before landing, prompting swift action from the pilots.
Emergency Declared, Swift Action Saves Lives
According to officials, the aircraft flight number 6E 579 had departed from Visakhapatnam earlier in the morning. As it approached Delhi, pilots detected an engine malfunction and immediately requested permission for an emergency landing.
At 10:39 AM, a ‘full emergency’ was declared at the airport. Fire tenders and medical teams were rushed to the runway and kept on standby as a precaution.
In a well-coordinated effort, the aircraft successfully landed at 10:54 AM, ensuring the safety of everyone on board.
Passengers Safe, Disaster Averted
Authorities confirmed that all passengers and crew members are safe, and no injuries were reported. The timely response by the flight crew and ground teams played a crucial role in preventing a catastrophe.
Aircraft Leased from Turkish Airlines
Sources revealed that the aircraft was a Boeing 737 leased by IndiGo from Turkey-based Corendon Airlines. The plane has now been grounded for a detailed technical inspection.
IndiGo, in its statement, reiterated that “passenger safety remains our top priority” and assured full cooperation with aviation authorities.
