Karnataka assures no LPG shortage for households; commercial supply restricted for hotels while hospitals, hostels and public institutions continue receiving cylinders
Bengaluru: Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Minister K. H. Muniyappa on Wednesday clarified that there is no shortage of LPG in the state, but domestic consumers will temporarily receive only one cylinder per connection as a precautionary supply management measure.
Speaking in Bengaluru, the minister stated that the state government has reviewed the situation with gas companies and assured citizens that domestic LPG supply will continue without disruption despite global geopolitical tensions.
Domestic Supply Limited to One Cylinder
According to K. H. Muniyappa, LPG companies are currently supplying only one cylinder per household connection, and consumers have been advised to use cooking gas responsibly and avoid unnecessary consumption.
The minister explained that the restriction is primarily meant to ensure equitable distribution of LPG across the state and prevent panic buying or hoarding.
Officials indicated that Karnataka requires around 3.5 lakh domestic LPG cylinders and about 50,000 commercial cylinders every day to meet statewide demand.
Commercial Supply Curbed for Hotels
While domestic supply continues, the government has restricted commercial LPG supply for certain sectors, particularly hotels and large-scale event venues.
However, the minister echoed that essential services will not be affected.
Hospitals, hostels, and public institutions providing critical services will continue receiving commercial LPG cylinders without interruption.
“Hospitals, hostels and institutions serving the public interest will continue to receive commercial LPG cylinders. However, the supply cannot be extended to hotels and wedding functions at this stage,” Muniyappa said.
Iran–Israel Conflict Not Affecting Karnataka Supply
The minister also addressed concerns about the ongoing geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel, stating that the conflict will not impact domestic LPG supply in Karnataka.
He said the government has already held discussions with gas companies to ensure uninterrupted supply for households.
“There is no need for citizens to panic about domestic LPG availability. We have already reviewed the situation with gas companies,” he assured.
At the same time, Muniyappa warned that strict action will be taken against individuals attempting to hoard LPG cylinders during the current situation.
Government Monitoring Demand and Supply
According to official data shared by the department, Karnataka’s daily LPG demand stands at approximately 3.5 lakh domestic cylinders and around 50,000 commercial cylinders.
Authorities stated that the government is working closely with oil marketing companies to ensure that household supply remains stable and uninterrupted across the state.
Political Clash Between Congress and BJP
The issue also triggered a heated debate between the ruling Indian National Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party in the state legislature.
During the discussion, Congress MLA H. D. Ranganath raised concerns about the rising price of LPG cylinders, claiming that the cost of a domestic cylinder has increased significantly.
He alleged that a cylinder previously priced at around Rs. 900 is now being sold for nearly Rs. 1,800, while commercial cylinders earlier priced at Rs. 2,000 are reportedly reaching Rs. 4,000 in some cases.
Ranganath blamed the situation on the “weak foreign policy” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which triggered protests from BJP legislators inside the assembly.
BJP Responds to Allegations
Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party strongly objected to the accusations, stating that the LPG supply disruption is primarily caused by global factors and should not be politicized.
BJP leader V. Sunil Kumar said that many countries around the world are facing similar energy supply challenges due to ongoing international tensions.
He added that while the opposition shares public concerns, the state government must also address its own administrative challenges rather than blaming external factors alone.
Priyank Kharge Questions NDA Government
Meanwhile, Karnataka’s RDPR and IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge questioned the response of the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre regarding the current situation.
Kharge asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not addressed the issue publicly, even as concerns about LPG supply and global energy disruptions were growing.
“Where is Modi? Has he said anything about this issue? He congratulates the Indian team, but why is he silent on this matter?” Kharge questioned during the debate.
His remarks prompted loud protests from BJP legislators, further intensifying the political exchange inside the assembly.
Restaurants in Bengaluru May Suspend Services
Amid the uncertainty surrounding commercial LPG supply, restaurant associations in Bengaluru have warned that some eateries may temporarily suspend services if the supply situation worsens.
Industry representatives said that commercial kitchens heavily depend on LPG, and prolonged restrictions could affect daily operations.
