Modi government intensifies action on online gambling, blocks hundreds of apps and betting platforms including satta, matka and casino networks

New Delhi: In a massive nationwide crackdown on illegal online gambling, the Central Government has blocked over 8,400 illegal betting websites and apps, with nearly 4,900 platforms taken down after the implementation of the Online Gaming law, significantly tightening the noose around digital betting networks in India.

Authorities have intensified action against a wide range of illegal platforms, including online sports betting websites, virtual casinos, and peer-to-peer betting exchanges. These platforms often operate outside regulatory frameworks and are linked to financial fraud, addiction, and illegal money circulation.

The crackdown also covers real-money gaming apps, including those offering slots, roulette, live dealer games, and traditional satta and matka networks, which continue to operate in digital formats despite strict laws.

4,900 Platforms Blocked After Online Gaming Law
According to official data, nearly 4,900 illegal platforms were blocked after the enforcement of the Online Gaming Act, which has strengthened the legal framework to regulate online gaming and betting activities in the country.

The law has enabled authorities to take faster and more decisive action against platforms violating Indian regulations, particularly those operating from offshore locations targeting Indian users.

Hundreds of Apps and Links Taken Down
In addition to large-scale blocking, the government has also shut down around 300 websites and online betting apps as part of targeted enforcement efforts.

Earlier this year, in January, authorities had blocked 242 illegal betting and gambling website links, signaling a consistent and escalating approach toward curbing digital gambling networks.

Focus on Financial Crimes and Public Safety
Officials have emphasized that many of these platforms are linked to financial irregularities, cyber fraud, and addiction-related social issues, prompting the need for strict intervention.

The crackdown is part of a broader effort to protect users from exploitative platforms and ensure compliance with India’s digital and financial laws.

Tightening Digital Surveillance and Enforcement
With the rise of online gaming and betting apps, authorities are expected to further enhance monitoring mechanisms and cross-border enforcement strategies to prevent the re-emergence of such illegal platforms.

The government’s latest action sends a strong signal to operators and users alike, reinforcing that illegal betting activities will face strict legal consequences in India’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
