Warden caught hiding cannabis in undergarments inside Parappana Agrahara Central Prison; police say murder accused allegedly offered Rs. 10,000 to arrange supply

Bengaluru: A shocking case of drug smuggling inside prison premises has surfaced at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru, where a jail warden was caught allegedly attempting to supply ganja to inmates. Police have arrested the accused warden, identified as Prakash Gavade, after prison staff discovered the contraband hidden in his undergarments during routine checks.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns about security lapses and illegal activities inside one of Karnataka’s largest prisons.

Warden Caught During Security Check
According to officials, the incident took place on March 9 at around 8:15 pm when the warden entered the prison premises for duty. Staff stationed at the Inspection Section–2 conducted a routine check and noticed suspicious behaviour.

During the inspection, officers found cash and a packet wrapped in black tape concealed inside his undergarments. When the packet was opened, authorities discovered that it contained ganja, prompting immediate action.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Prakash Gavade attempted to smuggle the narcotic substance into the prison while trying to avoid detection by the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) personnel deployed at the facility.
Following the discovery, prison officials detained him and alerted the Karnataka Police, after which he was formally arrested.

Murder Accused Allegedly Offered Rs 10,000

During police interrogation, investigators reportedly learned that an inmate accused in a murder case had allegedly contacted the warden and asked him to bring ganja into the prison.
The prisoner is said to have offered Rs. 10,000 in exchange for delivering the narcotic substance inside the jail premises. Police believe the warden brought the ganja from outside with the intention of supplying it to the inmate.
Authorities from the Parappana Agrahara Police Station are currently conducting further investigations to determine whether other individuals were involved in the smuggling attempt.

Despite DGP Warning, Illegal Activities Continue
The latest incident has sparked concern as it comes despite earlier warnings issued by the Director General of Police.

In December last year, the Karnataka Police chief conducted a surprise inspection at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, during which several areas, including the kitchen, hospital and prison bakery, were examined.

During the visit, officials had clearly warned staff members that strict action would be taken if they were found involved in illegal activities such as smuggling mobile phones or narcotics into the prison.
The DGP had also cautioned that misuse of facilities like the prison bakery to produce illicit substances, such as wine using yeast, would attract severe disciplinary action.
Despite these warnings, the latest case indicates that illegal activities inside the prison continue to pose a serious challenge for authorities.

Police have now intensified their probe to determine whether similar smuggling networks exist inside the prison system.
