Early morning service halt affects commuters on Purple Line; BMRCL signs Rs40 crore naming rights deal for DRDO Sports Complex station on Blue Line
Bengaluru: In a temporary disruption that impacted early commuters, train services on the Purple Line of Namma Metro were briefly halted on Sunday morning due to maintenance work. Meanwhile, in a significant development, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has entered into a Rs40 crore agreement for station naming rights and infrastructure support on the upcoming Blue Line.
Metro services were suspended between Garudacharpalya and MG Road stations from 7:00 AM to 7:45 AM on Sunday. The disruption was caused by scheduled track maintenance work, which had been communicated earlier by BMRCL through official channels.
Although the interruption occurred early in the day and being a Sunday resulted in relatively fewer passengers, some commuters faced inconvenience during the affected time window. Services resumed normally after 7:45 AM.
Rs40 Crore Agreement for Blue Line Station Naming Rights
In a major infrastructure and revenue initiative, BMRCL has signed an agreement with Bagmane Developers Pvt. Ltd. for the DRDO Sports Complex Metro Station on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) Blue Line (Phase 2A).
Under the agreement, Bagmane Developers has secured naming rights for the station for a period of 20 years in exchange for Rs40 crore. Out of this, Rs20 crore has already been paid, with the remaining amount to follow as per the contract terms.
Scope Limited to Naming Rights Only
BMRCL clarified that the agreement strictly includes station naming rights and does not extend to advertising rights, commercial space usage, or connectivity benefits within the station premises.
Additionally, Bagmane Developers will contribute to the interior design and façade development of the metro station.
Blue Line Expansion on ORR Corridor
The 19.75-kilometre-long Outer Ring Road corridor, stretching from Central Silk Board to KR Puram, will include 17 stations, including the DRDO Sports Complex station. This marks the sixth such agreement signed by BMRCL under this corridor.
Construction Progress: Composite Girder Installation
As part of the ongoing Blue Line construction, significant progress has been made near the Marathahalli bridge, where two out of four composite girders have been successfully installed. The work is being jointly executed by BMRCL and Shankaranarayana Constructions.
The Blue Line project under Phase 2A is advancing across key IT corridors, including KR Puram, Mahadevapura, HSR Layout, Bellandur, and Marathahalli, which witness heavy daily commuter traffic.
Driverless Metro Trains to Boost Capacity
In a further boost to the project, BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) is expected to supply two driverless metro train sets for the Blue Line in the coming days. These trains are expected to enhance efficiency and capacity along the busy ORR stretch.
