Accused tried to ram vehicle into police during interception; probe reveals organized illegal cricket betting network defrauding public
Udupi: In a major crackdown on organized crime, police in Udupi district have arrested five individuals for attempting to attack police personnel and operating an illegal cricket betting racket in Karkala and Shirva regions. The arrests followed a dramatic vehicle interception and subsequent investigation that exposed a fraudulent betting network targeting the public.
The first incident occurred near a Honda showroom at Hanchikatte in Kasaba village of Karkala taluk. Acting on suspicion, Sub-Inspector Prasanna M.S. and his team from Karkala Rural Police Station attempted to stop a black car approaching from Banglegudde Circle. However, instead of halting, the occupants allegedly attempted to ram the vehicle into police personnel, obstructing officials from performing their duties.
High-Alert Chase Leads to Seizure in Shirva
Following the initial alert, another police team led by Sub-Inspector Manjunath Marbada from Shirva Police Station tracked the same vehicle moving suspiciously from Belman. Though the driver initially slowed down, he allegedly attempted to evade police by pushing past an officer before fleeing. The vehicle was later successfully intercepted and seized in Shirva town.
Five Accused Identified and Arrested
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sudharshan Shetty (29) from Nadur, Kartavya Shetty (27) from Herur, Arun Shetty (29) from Moodur, Tejas (28) from Belanje in Hebri, and Prajwal Shetty (29) from Shirur in Byndoor taluk.
Illegal Cricket Betting Racket Exposed
During interrogation, police uncovered that the accused were part of an organized cricket betting syndicate. They allegedly lured people into investing money with promises of high returns, only to cheat them through illegal gambling operations.
Cases Registered in Two Police Stations
Separate cases have been registered at Karkala Town Police Station for obstructing police duty and at Shirva Police Station for illegal betting activities. Authorities are continuing investigations to identify wider links and financial transactions connected to the racket.
Police Warn Against Illegal Betting
Officials have urged the public to stay away from unauthorized betting platforms, warning that such networks often involve financial fraud and criminal activity.
