Continuous summer rains push air quality across Karnataka cities into ‘Good’ and ‘Satisfactory’ categories; Bengaluru AQI hovers around 40, Kodagu emerges as cleanest district
Bengaluru: Continuous summer showers have significantly improved air quality across Karnataka, including the capital Bengaluru, bringing much-needed relief to residents. On Thursday, most cities in the state recorded Air Quality Index (AQI) levels in the ‘Good’ and ‘Satisfactory’ categories, offering cleaner and healthier air.
Areas such as Gandhi Bazaar and Bommanahalli recorded AQI levels around 40, placing them firmly in the ‘Good’ category. Persistent rainfall has helped settle dust particles, leading to clearer skies and fresher air. Although industrial areas like Peenya reported slightly higher pollution levels, they still remained within the ‘Satisfactory’ range.
AQI Levels Across Major Cities
- Bengaluru: 38 – 52 (Good / Satisfactory) – PM10 & PM2.5
- Mysuru: 42 – 55 (Satisfactory) – PM2.5
- Hubballi-Dharwad: 45 – 60 (Satisfactory) – PM10
- Mangaluru: 35 – 48 (Good) – PM2.5
- Belagavi: 50 – 65 (Satisfactory) – PM10
Cleaner Air in Coastal and Malnad Regions
Mangaluru recorded ‘Good’ air quality, with clean coastal winds contributing to lower pollution levels. Udupi remained in the ‘Satisfactory’ category. Kodagu district continued to report the cleanest air in the state, thanks to its lush greenery and consistent rainfall, making it highly favourable for health and tourism.
Slight Rise in Mysuru Market Areas
While Mysuru largely maintained ‘Satisfactory’ air quality, market areas saw AQI levels nearing 100 due to festive activity and increased vehicular movement, indicating a localised rise in pollution.
Improvement in North Karnataka Too
Parts of Hubballi recorded AQI levels around 35, reflecting very clean air conditions. Despite rising temperatures, humidity, and light rain forecasts have helped keep pollution levels under control.
“While current AQI levels are safe for the general population, people with asthma or respiratory conditions should remain cautious during evening hours,” experts advised.
Safe Conditions for Health and Outdoor Activities
The current air quality is considered safe for all age groups. It is an ideal time for outdoor activities such as walking, exercise, and recreation. Pollution levels across coastal and southern interior regions remain under control, also benefiting tourism.
