16-year-old reported missing after leaving home to play football; investigators examine digital activity as body is recovered from beach

Kochi: A 16-year-old boy was found dead at a beach near Kochi, prompting police to investigate whether mobile phone gaming addiction or related online activity had any connection to the circumstances surrounding his death. Officials confirmed on Saturday that the probe is ongoing and no conclusion has been drawn at this stage.

Victim Identified
The deceased has been identified as Arjunkumar (16), a native of Njarakkal, police said. Family members described him as a student who followed a regular routine and had no known history of prolonged absence from home.

Last Known Movements
According to police, Arjunkumar left home on Thursday evening, telling his family that he was heading to play football at a turf ground. When he failed to return later that night and could not be contacted, concern grew among relatives.

Missing Complaint and Search
Based on a complaint filed by his mother, police registered a missing persons case and launched a search operation. The teenager’s body was subsequently recovered from a nearby beach, officials confirmed.
“We are examining all possible angles, including the role of mobile phone usage and online gaming. At this point, the investigation remains open, and no theory has been ruled out,” a senior police officer said.
Investigation Focus
Investigators are analysing the boy’s mobile phone data, call records, and digital footprint, while also recording statements from friends, family members, and locals. Police sources said the aim is to reconstruct the teenager’s movements in the hours after he left home.

The incident has shocked residents in the coastal area, with parents and educators expressing concern over increasing screen time and online gaming exposure among adolescents. Locals gathered near the beach as police continued preliminary procedures.

Authorities said a post-mortem examination and forensic analysis will help determine the exact cause of death. Police reiterated that findings will be made public once the investigation reaches a definitive stage.
