Fatal shooting outside residence exposes domestic discord as the accused flees; police confirm divorce case was pending in court
Faridabad: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead outside her residence in Faridabad on Friday evening, in an incident that came to light today, in a case that police say stemmed from a prolonged marital dispute. Authorities confirmed on Saturday that the accused is the woman’s estranged husband, who fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Victim and Accused Identified
Police identified the accused as Dilip Yadav, and the victim as Sangeeta Devi (30). The couple had been married for 13 years and had two daughters, aged 11 and 5. Officials said the couple had been living separately, and a divorce petition was pending before a court in Delhi.
Sequence of Events
According to investigators, the accused arrived at the woman’s residence around 8 pm accompanied by some family members. Moments later, gunfire was heard, prompting neighbours to rush to the spot. The woman sustained fatal injuries, while the accused escaped before police could reach, officials said.
“Preliminary findings indicate the incident followed ongoing marital discord. A case has been registered, and multiple teams are conducting raids to apprehend the accused,” a senior police officer said.
Investigation and Legal Action
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and are examining CCTV footage, witness statements, and the source of the firearm. Senior officers said efforts are underway to trace the accused’s movements across Haryana and neighbouring regions.
The incident has shocked local residents, who described hearing loud gunshots and seeing panic unfold within minutes. Authorities have increased patrolling in the area and assured swift action.
Investigators said the post-mortem examination will aid the probe, while the children are being supported by relatives. Police reiterated their commitment to bring the accused to justice at the earliest.
