Khaki trap tightens as Indiranagar police foil midnight ATM heist using cutting machine; accused fails to extract cash

Bengaluru: A 23-year-old Nepali national was arrested by city police after he allegedly attempted to rob a Bank of Baroda ATM in a daring midnight operation near Double Road in Indiranagar, police said on Saturday.

Midnight Attempt at Indiranagar ATM
According to police sources, the incident occurred around midnight on February 10, when the accused allegedly pulled down the shutter of the ATM located near Double Road in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar area to avoid public attention before attempting the theft.

CCTV Camera Covered, Cutting Machine Used
Investigators said the accused covered the CCTV cameras inside the ATM using cloth and adhesive tape and attempted to break open the cash vault with the help of a cutting machine. However, despite repeated efforts, he failed to access the ATM safe.

Accused Fled Empty-Handed
Police confirmed that the accused could not retrieve any cash and fled the spot without causing major damage to the machine. The suspicious activity was later detected during routine surveillance and follow-up investigation.

Police Action and Arrest
Following technical analysis and local inquiry, a team from Indiranagar Police Station tracked and arrested the suspect. During interrogation, the accused reportedly told police that he was working in a hotel kitchen in the city.
“The accused made an attempt to break open the ATM after covering the CCTV cameras, but failed to access the cash vault. He was arrested following investigation,” a police officer said.
Case Registered Under Relevant Sections
A case has been registered at Indiranagar police station under relevant sections of law, and further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused was involved in similar ATM theft attempts elsewhere. The ATM belongs to Bank of Baroda, the police added.
