IMD issues advisory as Karnataka braces for intense summer; Health Department on alert over rising heatstroke risk in Silicon City
Bengaluru: With summer setting in early across Karnataka, Bengaluru is witnessing a steady temperature rise, prompting a heatwave alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather agency has warned that temperatures in the state are likely to surge further between March and May, with the capital expected to touch 38–39°C after the second week of March.
Once known for its moderate climate, Bengaluru, often referred to as the “cool city,” is now experiencing unusually high daytime temperatures, causing discomfort among residents and increasing demand for air coolers and air-conditioning units in homes and offices.
IMD Advisory Signals Intense Summer Ahead
According to IMD officials, this year’s summer is expected to be more intense compared to last year, with prolonged dry spells and above-normal temperatures across several districts of Karnataka.
The advisory cautions that rising temperatures may lead to heat-related illnesses if precautionary measures are not followed. The department has indicated that daytime heat will peak in the coming weeks, particularly from mid-March onwards.
Health Department on High Alert
Following the IMD warning, the Karnataka Health Department has been placed on alert. Officials are preparing to release detailed heatwave guidelines to prevent health emergencies, especially cases of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Doctors have raised concerns that if body temperature crosses 40°C, it can result in severe complications, including life-threatening heatstroke. Hospitals are also preparing for a possible rise in heat-related cases.
Vulnerable Groups Asked to Take Precautions
Medical experts have advised people with high blood pressure, heart ailments, pregnant women, senior citizens, and children to avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours.
Doctors recommend avoiding outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm, when the sun’s intensity is at its highest. Residents are also advised to:
- Drink plenty of water and fluids
- Consume foods that prevent dehydration
- Wear light, breathable clothing
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
Public health officials stress that preventive measures and awareness are crucial to minimise the impact of extreme heat.
Bengaluru Braces for Scorching Months
As temperatures continue to climb, Bengaluru is preparing for a challenging summer season. Authorities have urged citizens to stay updated with official weather bulletins and health advisories in the coming weeks.
With forecasts predicting sustained heat through May, residents are advised to prioritise hydration and limit unnecessary outdoor movement to stay safe during the peak summer months.
